A significant point of contention has long been the alterations made to the original Star Wars film, especially during the infamous Special Editions released starting in the late 1990s. George Lucas was very clear: he did not want the original theatrical version of 1977 to be publicly shown again. Lucas personally favored certain edits and changes, often defending his right to modify his work—stating, "I'm sorry you saw a half-completed film and fell in love with it, but I wanted it the way I want it to be."
