Casting was a meticulous process. The studio aimed for fresh faces to embody the central heroes—Luke Skywalker (initially played by Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), and Han Solo (Harrison Ford). Notable additions included Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Peter Cushing as Governor Tarkin, and veteran David Prowse as Vader (voice by James Earl Jones). Harrison Ford, originally brought in as a crew member, impressed Lucas during his scenes and was ultimately cast as Han Solo.
