While well-intentioned, this approach inevitably leads to unintended consequences. For example, in these stories, women are depicted as systematically overthrowing men, and outsiders or marginalized individuals must outmatch those within the system—shifting the norm to the exception, and marginal to the center, often keeping the marginalized in perpetual opposition rather than genuine inclusion.
This inversion isn’t limited to characters but extends into visual and thematic elements—imagine a “perfect” costume that is only perfect when worn by a woman, or social pressures that turn stereotypes on their heads. When these narratives become normalized—through social pressures and new taboos—it creates a culture where opposing stereotypes is no longer countercultural but becomes the new norm.
