The Problem
Engagement is somewhat lacking in the #Hive ecosystem. Quite often, posts that don't make it into the trending section get very little engagement other than a few votes. It's entirely understandable that low quality posts would suffer from this, but how can we design our posts and modify our behaviour to encourage more engagement?

The Solution
- Run a contest: Some authors run contests and giveaways that encourage people to comment on their posts. A recent example of this is this contest by @xplosive.
- Upvote good comments on your posts: Even if your posts only get a few comments, make the effort to upvote comments that contribute to the conversation. Your followers and readers may start to recognise commenting on your posts as an opportunity to earn more author rewards. Remember that this is also an opportunity to earn curation rewards!
- Reply to comments on your posts: Start a conversation. Remember that the goal here is engagement. The more you engage with your readers, the more likely they are to engage with you.

Thank you for mentioning my giveaway/contest.
I will probably do more giveaways/contests in the future.
Sure. Your contest was actually the inspiration for this post!

Engagement is a very crucial part of social media if not the main aim. Sadly its not like that here on hive but i am sure there's always room for improvement.
With time i believe we'll get there
Agreed. What puzzles me is why it isn't like that on hive?

Because of the selfishness and the greed.
The most of the people focus only on their own posts, and they do not (or rarely) comment under other people's posts.
Many people write posts, but only a few write comments under other people's posts. They write their own posts, and they wait for the rewards.
If people would support each other, the Hive blockchain would be a better place, and the Hive would worth probably much more.
I suppose that's unavoidable... along with spammy posts.

If you don't add friends on Facebook, you probably won't have anyone to comment on your posts, I think the same analogy can be applied here :)
You do not even need friends on Facebook to get interaction.
If you use hashtags and/or groups, the engagement comes naturally. This is the aspect, where Facebook is better than the Hive blockchain.
You don't even need friends on Hive to get interaction.
Look at all those introduceyourselfs and newcomers on communities :)
But they hardly ever get any interaction later.
The introduction posts are just a small piece of the cake.
You have to see and admit the truth that the real, human comments are rare on the Hive blockchain in general.
I'm having more interaction here than on my own Facebook profile, lol. I didn't have interaction on my introduceyourself, but lately I have been getting comments from people that enjoy my content.
And this is simply achieved by making content and enjoying the content of others, after all, this is social media. It is actually quite irrelevant to compare Facebook activity with Hive, the difference in the number of users between the two platforms is simply abysmal.
And as you can see, there is already interaction in this post, just discussing different ideas :) Great, isn't it?
It depends on the viewpoint. We are debating the interaction level on Hive. Discussing something else would be better.
But at least it is indeed something. More than nothing.
Yes, that's a good point! I like to browse recent posts to find new people to follow.
