Book Travel With Your Bitcoin

in LeoFinance2 years ago (edited)

One of the biggest criticisms of bitcoin being a medium of exchange is that very few places accept it. You're forced to convert your bitcoin into fiat before you can get that value to acquire something in the real world.

I don't know how these people think adoption works as if overnight people just start accepting a new currency that is voluntary and not forced on them by the government. Well bar, El Salvador and the Central African Republic, but even in those notions, bitcoin isn't the standard for everything.

Building out a circular economy takes time, we're seeing payment providers take on the bitcoin payments burden and giving merchants no exposure to bitcoin, with the likes of Strike and OpenNode. While those who want direct exposure can spin up a BTC pay server pretty easily.

After a decade we're starting to see businesses get into the bitcoin space, not only bitcoin centric businesses but stores and even travel agencies. The more places that accept bitcoin, the more places will follow as it becomes the norm.

During my mission to find businesses that accept bitcoin, I happened to come across four travel sites that accept BTC either on the main chain or using the lightning network. I think many people who get into bitcoin and shitcoins dream of being able to take that trip they've always wanted and now you can do it directly with the travel agent.

Travala

Founded in 2017, Travala.com is one of the first online travel agencies to focus on accepting digital asset payments. Backed by binance, you can imagine this platform would be a shitcoin casino and it rightly is, with its own native token and accepting so many coins it will make your head spin.

Have you spent your bitcoin

While it may not be the big boys like Booking.com, Kayak or Hotels.com, it sure is a start. We're also going to see shopify sites accept bitcoin through strike soon so travel agents using shopify themes could easily accept bitcoin and receive fiat.

Alternatively you could go through a voucher service like The Bitcoin Company or Bitrefill.

If you've spent your bitcoin or shitcoins, what did you spend it on? What was the route that you took and have you spent it directly with a merchant or service provider before without the need for conversions to fiat or stablecoins?

Have your say

Lol, I did actually use AVA on that travala site and it fully paid for some flights I booked when it pumped in 2021 which basically gave me a free flight, happy days. Couldn't have timed that one better

LOL always do your purchases in the bull market and stack in the bear market,

Researching into travel and accommodation interesting findings @chekohler, let us hope this continues to grow.

Being able to spend directly is the next step in adoration

Spending flights, accommodation, groceries no matter tax is inclusive of price, should not perturb government institutions, they collect either which way, hence I do not understand what the fuss is about.

This was a good read and gave me a heads up about the travel companies now accepting crypto directly. We are planning a big trip next year and even though I could use my crypto card that technically liquidates and pays the recipient so I may look into this as an option. Would be nice to make a direct crypto payment for a long haul trip

Depending on the country you in, it can still be a tax pain! But if it's not then spending directly is so much easier and cheaper

Very true and as time goes by and people see crypto less and less as snake oil then the mainstream adoption should slowly slowly happen. It's come a long way already

Dear @chekohler , If I use Bitcoin to travel the world, I can enjoy it very cheaply. Becasuse Fees and taxes for exchanging foreign currencies will be exempted.
Perhaps you foresee the future with the brilliant imagination of Indians.😄

I am all for the circular economy but for me personally I don't see the need to spend bitcoin just yet as long as I have fiat I can use that instead, my bitcoin is a last resort

It is great when people start excepting Bitcoin and other crypto's!! I wonder if these services are available in South Africa, I will have to check it out!!

I don't think there are any services that accept bitcoin direclty in South Africa, but you can by indirectly using a service like bitrefill
