I am a Hive minnow with 57 followers as of now, June 2022.
Lately, I have been getting a lot of encouragement from fellow Hive bros and sis about engaging the community more, such as from @zakludick (see post).
Certainly, I heed such advice.
Then comes the next question: Who should I be engaging with?
The correct answer is anyone relevant.
But I also thought about the positive impact one can make if we minnow preferentially upvotes posts of other minnows, and try to engage them.
As I browse through the number of upvotes in the posts, some have high vote values, while some have low vote values. I now make a conscious decision to engage with these low-value posts. They also tend to be minnows like me with relatively lesser followers, presumably new Hive users.
My thinking is that it's easier to get noticed by new Hive users if I upvoted them than to vote for the big accounts. This noticing can turn to friendship on Hive since we are both just starting out and building the account.
Indeed, Hive Minnows should do their part in supporting other minnows. The net yield in terms of the curation amount earned may not be high, but instrumentally it does something very important: to bond the minnows.
This is for sustainability's sake. If our wish is more new users will come onboard Hive, we should perhaps have a culture where the minnows and new users interact more intentionally with new users.
Hopefully this strategy is a sound one and people follow it.
This is akin to new immigrants arriving in a new country getting help from some recent immigrants. We know the common immediate concerns, plus we share the same pains. It makes staying easier.
It is ok to have cliques in Hive, just like in school and in work. If more Hive new users are coming onboard, let them form cliques. Hive is big enough to hold more cliques. Just let them come!
The whales or more senior Hive accounts can look out and support these newcomers too. Either by upvoting our posts or guiding us with tips.
This is how Hive can grow and achieve sustainability.

Indeed. I think a Minnow is a relatable character that out of every 10 friends they interact with need 5 of them to be Minnows, 4 of them should be active Redfish and 1 should be Dolphin or bigger.

I often tell people to build a network of your peers and grow your accounts together, which is a lot like what you are saying. There are only so many whales, orcas and even dolphins. Most of the dolphins also grew up together as well.

Your thought of giving attention to new ones is awesome. We all experience being new and it feels good when someone notices us amongst the crowd. I also make an effort to look around new ones and give whatever support I can. Unfortunately, I cannot always upvote especially when my voting mana is below 80% so the least I could do is leave a comment on their posts.
