Sometimes there's an odd comfort in knowing that you're not alone. Top part of your self description sounds very much like life here... urban homesteaders who refuse to have a job job, food stamps, public energy assistance, occasional independent gig economist; the closest thing we have to a "regular income" is my wife's SSI; proud owners of a 1997 Mazda (paid for); "fashions by Goodwill" and so forth.
Greed and the addiction to "shiny toys" has been the dominant paradigm for far too long... the new reality is being built every day.
