July 4th 2023 - Twitter and TANSTAAFL

in LeoFinance10 months ago (edited)

History repeats itself on Internet, just like anywhere else, but on what once was described as “information superhighway” such repeats occur in matter of months rather than years, decades or centuries. Twitter is a very good example, especially in its latest period since Elon Musk’s takeover. If you, by some chance, were frozen in time eight months ago, you wouldn’t have noticed if you only paid attention to Twitter and the way the Musk’s social network is portrayed in mainstream media and by Twitterati who can’t stand South African tycoon.

Basically, again we are seeing avalanche of articles and tweets that describe Musk’s new policies as absolute ruin of Twitter. Eight years ago it was introduction of paid verifications/subscriptions and today it is new policy of daily reading limits (10000 posts for verified accounts, 1000 posts for unverified accounts and 500 posts for newly created accounts). And just like new verification policies led many to publicly announce their exodus from Twitter and embrace of Mastodon, today many do the same and announce that they will be available at various Twitter alternatives like BlueSky or Nostr. This also led Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta to announce its own Twitter-killing microblogging application called Threads.

Many would argue that Musk’s new policies aren’t justified and they are motivated either by greed, incompetence or despair. But, at the end of the day, Twitter is supposed to be a business, which is run for profit. And current model, based on advertising and selling customers’ data is becoming increasingly untenable, with AI and data scrapping adding another layer of difficulty for Musk. So, Musk has probably remembered TANSTAAFL, good old acronym that stands for “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”, popularised by Robert A. Heinlein in his 1966 novel Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. Service provided by Twitter might be easy and convenient, but it isn’t free. Until recently Twitter users paid by having their privacy compromised, but now this won’t be enough for social networks to stay afloat. Unless social network is truly decentralised and based on principles tested in the world of crypto, more and more limitations and introduction of paid subscriptions is going to be rule rather than exception.

My previous @v4vapp proposal has expired. I have a new one which is running but unfunded right now. I'm still running @v4vapp and all my other services.

I've just updated v4v.app and I'm getting ready for some exciting new features after the next hard fork.

Please consider asking your friends to vote for prop #265 or consider unvoting the return vote.

For understandable reasons in the current crypto climate it is harder to get funded by the DHF, I accept this so I'm asking a wider audience for help again. I'll also add that I power up Hive every day and usually power up larger amounts on 1st of the Month. I'm on Hive for ideological reasons much more than for only economic benefit.

Additionally you can also help with a vote for Brianoflondon's Witness using KeyChain or HiveSigner

If you have used v4v.app I'd really like to hear your feedback, and if you haven't I'd be happy to hear why or whether there are other things you want it to do.
