Hive Potential: Remembering Hive Wannabes

Before the fork off the Steem chain, Hive stood to be just another copied project off its progenitor. Being the first of its kind, Steem had a really unique position of leading the way in terms of decentralized social media technology with a strong application in finance.

As with every great idea just starting out, it was quickly copied when the obvious flaws of the platform started becoming more pronounced, leading to some level of dissatisfaction among early investors.

Projects of Time Past

Whaleshares was one I remember a lot of People cross posted on the steemit chain. It was said to have been started by dissatisfied Whales at the time and while there was no massive jump shipping from the old chain at the time, certain people took it seriously enough to warrant attention on the steem chain.

As at the time, there was no obvious loyalty towards the old chain and a lot of people were simply looking to make massive profits so cross posting, and even cross advertising of similar brands was very much in vogue.

Another one I remember prominently was Blurt. These projects were very similar in nature to Hive when it took off but that is probably where the similarity ends. Although the Blurt Platform wasn't as popular as Whaleshares at the time in my opinion, it was still popular enough for me to have heard about it.

Where They Are

I won't call them failures per se, as anything on the Blockchain can be developed and received. However, I looked at the price of the Blurt token today and it was $0.004 with a market Cap of near zero. I couldn't even get a value for Whaleshares to show how that one is faring.

Why They Failed?

Perhaps the question shouldn't even be why these Platforms failed, but why Hive so far has succeeded. If you're going to copy an already existing project, it is going to be a difficult sell if you don't improve on it.

When Hive forked off steem, the odds were actually against us to succeed like it or not. However a strong sense of community, coupled with the relentless effort by our developers and the community alike has put us in a better position than our progenitor as of today.

Conclusion

Innovation and community has been the Keyword on Hive from day one, and the desire to improve has seen us give rise to other successful tokens off the chain like Leofinance and Splinterlands. We have some way to go to be called a success, but I'll say the fundamentals are in place already to ensure a sustainable future.

What are your thoughts?

Yes this is a good way of looking at the copy cat chains and why beating or bettering the original is very difficult. Hive continuously developing makes that gap even bigger. I can't fathom why users from here would even lower their standards by getting involved over there. Surely concentrating and spending time on the original would add more value long term. I don't have the time to even consider going anywhere else as hive sucks every spare second there is.

Hive being able to survive the fork off Steem has been major as a result of the community first and foremost.
It was birthed based on community togetherness. I was fortunate to witness it all and never had second thought moving off Steem.

Another reason I feel Hive is standing tall and evolving is there's that sense of ownership, belonging probably for majority but it was something I never really felt on Steem.

And so far it's been awesome being here on Hive.

It indeed has been a swell time. My only regret is not taking this place seriously enough in the past.
