Are you missing out on Crypto Opportunities?

Do you check Coinmarket cap 20 times a day?

  • What coin is up?
  • What is the price of Hive?

The Data often tells an interesting story ...

Over the last few days I have been digging out some statistics on different coins and I came across a few more websites that supply aggregate market spot prices, and historical prices.

Going down this rabbit hole led me to a few interesting discoveries.

This is part of my #rediscovercrypto journey because since I last looked at these aggregator sites the wealth of information that is now at your fingertips is astonishing.

Before talking about the new sites I found lets take a closer look at Coin Market Cap

Coinmarket Cap

The most well known Crypto Price site has been around since 2013, like many things Crypto shrouded in secrecy.
In 2020 it was purchased by Binance for an undisclosed sum. It is headquartered in Delaware and has around 250m visits a month. (I am not the only one checking my phone all the time)

Since I last looked at this site it has come on a long way and from an Analytics point of view has many new interesting features.

CMC Info Section.png

  • Not sure if these could be useful for assessing trading patterns but intotheblock has much deeper analysis available on their site.

Bitcoin Ratings.png

  • Take Ratings with a grain of salt, but the commentary is interesting. This is probably limited and only available for the top cap coins.

But CMC also has much more info which you might not have noticed.

Bitcoin Tags.png

Not only does this show tags like “store of value, POW”, It even shows which of the big funds are invested (Coinbase Ventures, Polychain Capital, ...)

It has an API with lots of interesting endpoints but unfortunately you have to pay for most of the access.

Hive

Of note as of writing Hive is listed at #186 by market cap.

I’ll come back to this later...

Coin Gecko

CoinGecko provides a data platform, digital currency prices, and fundamental analysis of the cryptocurrency market. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Singapore and has around 97m visits a month.

On my #rediscovercrypto search for Crypto data this site attracted me because it has a free price API with lots of data endpoints.

It also similar stats but also has lots of other interesting company stats.

Hive

Hive is listed here at #272 by market cap.

I wondered about this discrepancy. That will be interesting to dig into.

CoinCap

CoinCap.io is a realtime cryptocurrency market data. This was the last site I found on my journey was Coincap seems to be owned by Shapeshift, founded in 2015 and according to crunchbase has around 0.5m visits a month.

They also have a really good API with lots of free stuff.

Hive

Hive is listed here at #233 by market cap.

Data for Price Analysis

10077.jpg

The three sites reviewed all have different views on the ranking of #Hive.

I was expecting some differences due to time prices were updated etc but to drop from 186 down to 272 is a worrying discrepancy so what is going on.

The three sites also list different coins. I know there is a process for applying for a listing and your coin gets on the list if it meets certain criteria. The people at hive are all to familiar with this as I frequently see campaigns to get coins listed here on hive but I had never considered how volatile this makes the coin data listings.
It also does not explain why some coins are listed on CMC but have no rank.

There is more to the story...

The highest Rank coin I came across that was listed on Coingecko and not on CMC (top 200 was cETH

  • Rank CMC – NA. It's listed but has no market Data so doesnt appear in top 200.
  • Rank Coingecko – 35
  • Rank Coincap - 1480

What does this mean? I wouldnt be surprised by such discrepencies for a real **itcoin. But how can a coin have a market cap on one site of 7.7 Billion Dollars and not even be showing up on another site?

Conclusions

  • If you are just using Coinmarket cap you might not be getting a full view of the Crypto Markets. You might be missing trading opportunities on coins that for some reason are excluded or not listed on CMC.
  • There is some great data easily available on coins which I was not aware of.
  • There are free API’s for getting historical market data. Much better than webscraping!
  • The numbers such as Market Cap should clearly be taken with a grain of salt. They are next to meaningless.
  • I came across many other interesting sources of data in this journey which I will write about in upcoming posts. This post just focused on Coin Data.

What site do you use?
What about Hive Layer 2 Coins such as Leo?

If you are rediscovering crypto after an absence why not make a blog on Hive using the #rediscovercrypto and share with the community what you find.
