Are you new to Splinterlands and searching for some advice then you found the correct series! In this Beginner’s Guide Series, we are discussing things that new players of Splinterlands should know or try to learn. In this specific episode I want to highlight a few facts on how to deal with the most overpowered team possible. I am talking about a team which main attacking style is magic with an additional summoner which enforces the magic damage. If you found this article but are not playing this game yet, then feel free to join over the following link:

Typical Magic Build

Let’s start by describing the most overpowered build, that exists in Splinterlands. In my opinion it is without a doubt the magic attackers, although there are certainly other broken strategies out there. With that being said, I already made a Guide on how to utilize and place the magic attackers to make sure to bump your win rate up. So let’s quickly recap how a typical magic build looks like. In the majority of cases we are facing either Obsidian or Arlic as the summoners. The simple reason is that these two give additional Magic damage.

Furthermore, the team is living from its magic attackers, which is why we will see a lot of the following cards: Djinn Oshannus, Venari Wavesmith, Regal Peryton or Goblin Psychic. With that being said, it is important to know that most of the magic attackers are having problems with their health. This will come in handy later when we discuss how to face these kind of builds. Down below you will se some examples of the builds that we are likely to face.

Counter Options

With the defined problem, we can now work on a solution. This is what makes Splinterlands so unique, every strategy has a counter strategy in the form of abilities. To counter magic attacks we have a few options here. The main ones being Void Armor and Void as these two abilities gives us magic resistance. Reflect and Silence are also very important, as this gives us the opportunity to weaken the whole opponents board or just give some damage back which would could decide very close battles at the end. This means that cards like Unicorn Mustang, Failed Summoner, Bone Golem or Djinn Oshannus come a long way!

With this being said, the selection of the summoner is also very important! If we can assume that our opponent will play the magic build that I showed above, a good choice would be to select a summoner that nerfs the opponents magic card. This is best done with either Bortus or Thaddius Brood, as both of these summoners deduct one magic attack. An alternative choice could be Obsidian as it allows us to play the previous mentioned Earth cards.

Rest Of The Team

Now that we got the main structure of our team, we should talk about how to eliminate the opponent. When your opponent is playing a magic based team, it is safe to say that he needs some support units that have usually not a lot of health. This is exactly where we want them to hurt. With cards that have the Sneak, Opportunity or the Snipe ability we are able to target the back line of the opponent and slowly erase his support units until only his tank is left to die. Some examples could be Deeplurker or Mantoid.

Example Battles

This brings us to some example battles. In both cases we are facing the water deck which I chose to counter with the anti magic water team. In both cases we are working our way slowly through the backline while our tank is trying his best to hold of his magic attacks. Especially the second battle is a perfect example of how Void can secure you the victory over a Magic team.
