About Knowing What You Want and Changing Your Mind

Being a person who knows what she wants is very important in life. It brings you confidence and you inspire it in others, it gives you goals and the determination to pursue them and enjoy the ride, and also, a meaning to what you do, the sense of accomplishment when things get done, etc.

We should not mistake knowing what we want with stubbornness or "my way or the highway" (inflexibility). Collaborations are very powerful when all parties pull in the same direction.

Knowing what you want often results in a plan to achieve it. The higher the target, the more likely to have multiple stages involved, some of them interconnected.

The planning part is at least as important as the execution, but often more.

A bad plan can make the implementation part take more time, more money, or fail entirely because of avoidable circumstances. With a bad plan, you can reach a dead point from which you need to backtrack and try a different route, costing you time and money.

From my experience, there are two cases of people who concieve bad plans:

  • people who know what they want, but they don't know how to get there
  • people who only think or seem they know what they want

In the first case, they need help planning and need to understand they need this kind of help and accept or seek it, or they'll end up making many costly mistakes. It's a good thing they know what they want though.

In the second case, it's worse, because they are likely to be influenced often, change their minds, and don't have a clear direction, ending up making all kinds of mistakes on the way.

Knowing what you want is not mutually exclusive from changing your mind. Knowledge, understanding, and technology/industry evolve, and if you understand you are moving in the wrong direction it's better to stop than to persevere.

I agree. There is a famous saying, "Preparation is half the battle". Having a clear plan, goal, and how to achieve it is very important. I think that is critical especially now that we are nearing the halving.

That's a good saying. It's unfortunate when people know what they want but don't seem to be able to plan accordingly to reach their target(s).

There are certain moments I find myself in the first position, knowing what you want but not how to get there. Definitely during such moments, learning as much as we can from many reputable sources can help us in creating a good plan to get what we want. In my view, executing the plan can take a long time and sticking through that process is another challenge of its own.

I think we all find ourselves in the first category sometimes. The higher the target, the more difficult to see the best path to get there, especially if it involves long-term actions and interconnected, interdependent things that all need to happen or be achieved. Thanks for dropping by!

I agree that you should know what you want and create a plan. As things change, that plan may need to change or get scrapped. It sucks but its a part of life.

Yes, unfortunately, we rarely can achieve everything we set our mind on. That's where priorities are important and our power to adapt to changing situations.

I fall in one of these two categories. I know exactly what I want but I don’t know how to get there but something keeps telling me that I will get there. I’m trying my best but I know the future hold the best for me and let’s see how it will go

Sometimes when you dream big enough, you won't know the exact road that leads to it, but you can make steps in that direction, and the more you advance, the more it's revealed to you.

I agree, if you are on a road to nowhere it's best to turn around. You have to have goals and have a plan to achieve, but at times it just doesn't work!

Great post!

If you are convinced about the destination, but the road itself was badly chosen, you can turn back enough to try a different route.

but at times it just doesn't work

That can happen, of course, even with great plans, for reasons out of your control, often.

Gotta say this is a nice briefing on how to attain success in life.

Most people, as you have said don't know what they want or lack the know how to get there, for me that's why studying exist, everyone should study alternative choices of what they want to do with their lives and how to start immediately, I recommend praying to your creator and his JESUS christ for that direction then study all the way

Praying for guidance may work for some people. Others may prefer meditating and achieving a state of inner peace and equilibrium, others grew up in a culture of work and all they know is to work their way to success. None of these are mutually exclusive, and one can do all three.

Exactly that's what we need

Thank you for your input @gadrian on "About Knowing What You Want and Changing Your Mind. Changing your mind can really mess things up a lot in any case - like any kind of relationship with people even. That would cause a lot of chaos. 😂 It's not really funny but I'm thinking of it in a comical way like watching a funny TV sitcom. The "Big Bang Theory" is a totally funny show with some pretty silly characters. I have gotten a real kick out of watching this show. Comic relief can be very good for a person now and then. Have a great rest of the week. Barb !BBH !CTP #ctp

Yes, changing your mind can be messy. Think of it like building a house and not being decided exactly what should go where, and changing things as you go.

Yes, @gadrian that is a good way to think about it by building a house. Good comparison!

I know what i want but i lack time and resources 😅

but i lack time and resources

That's what time management is for. Resources... well, depends on what you want. In some cases, it's as easy as better money management or finding new sources of income. In some other cases, the discrepancy between what you have and what you need is so high, that you need to take it step by step.

Just as every human being is very busy in his life and if we want to change our mind in such a way, we will change certain things in it in such a way that we don't get angry so that we don't interact with people at all. Don't talk in anxiety and talk with good attitude.

Attitude is important when interacting with others.
