You bring up interesting questions and I think all of them are possible. If you remove the concepts of "decentralized network" for their startup and replace with other tech, it would still be an entertaining series to watch. It is also possible that they chose the topic on purpose and had intentions of presenting it as something really bad.
But most importantly, if writers whose job is to do research and make stories as believable as possible either failing to do so, or completely misunderstanding what decentralized networks are, chances are ordinary people might be misunderstanding it as well.
Perhaps these concepts are not easy to understand yet.

Great exercise considering how it'd go if they removed "decentralized network" and replace with other tech. As well as considering if they may have ill intent.
Even moreso, excellent to point out that if writers who's job it (arguably) is to make it understandable, can't or don't do so, what does that say for the average person.
