RE: StartUp TV Series - How Misunderstood Decentralized Social Networks Are!

in LeoFinance3 years ago

This is interesting, this show keeps popping up for me lately. I watched two episodes way back in 2016 the forgot about it. It sprang up a couple years later when I was working with Evan Carmichael. Then a couple days ago, @cynshineonline mentioned to me that it was on Netflix. And now, today, I'm seeing your post about it.

Is this show following me, lol?

Anyway, it's likely the makers of the show didn't feel like 'accuracy regarding DeFi' was a major priority, despite it being central to their plot, and despite research for it costing very little time/money.

A 'lack of importance' or 'lack of care' in storytelling is fairly common in our current media landscape, and I kind of get why.

I posted an article on "Freedom Of Speech, Censorship, and Downvotes" yesterday called "Emma's Dilemma", and it took and crazy amount of time/energy to be accurate on all facets of the issue.

You've done a great job outlining the plot holes, contradictions, and inaccuracies here, and it really does sound ridiculous, lol. But that may be the point.

Is it possible storytellers, script-writers, and journalists simply do not value accuracy? Is it possible the viewers who decide their ratings don't either? Is it possible the whole system of storytellers & story-consumers alike value melodrama, extremity, and ridiculousness far higher than accuracy?

Definitely food for thought, to me.

Thanks for sharing this and sparking a conversation. 🙏

You bring up interesting questions and I think all of them are possible. If you remove the concepts of "decentralized network" for their startup and replace with other tech, it would still be an entertaining series to watch. It is also possible that they chose the topic on purpose and had intentions of presenting it as something really bad.

But most importantly, if writers whose job is to do research and make stories as believable as possible either failing to do so, or completely misunderstanding what decentralized networks are, chances are ordinary people might be misunderstanding it as well.

Perhaps these concepts are not easy to understand yet.

Thank You.

Great exercise considering how it'd go if they removed "decentralized network" and replace with other tech. As well as considering if they may have ill intent.

Even moreso, excellent to point out that if writers who's job it (arguably) is to make it understandable, can't or don't do so, what does that say for the average person.

Great post and conversation, thanks again! 🙏
