I think a lot of that has to do with how Hive (Steemit) was promoted years ago. They focused too much on "crypto-enthusiast" instead of the average Joe's.

Yea, that's probably part of the reason. Not everyone on Hive wants to go deep into crypto. For a lot of people, understanding the basics is more than enough.
I still believe in promoting crypto mass adoption but maybe we could benefit from other approaches as well.

Those where the "golden days". A lot of things have changed since those days, and even though we're not even near the value of any of that today, neither in terms of rewards on articles or the actual token price, things are better nowadays.
