Why is it Hard for Newbies to Get Upvotes?

in LeoFinance8 months ago

Some time not so long ago, I encountered a question posted on threads asking why is it hard for newbies to get upvotes.

Maybe that is one secret code that we cannot totally decipher or can we?

I left a comment under the thread saying Hive is a social network, hence, we need to make interactions with others so that they will know we exist. There wasn't any response after that and I would like to think that the user understood it (or she didn't read it). It's similar to the traditional social media where no one would be "liking" or "hearting" our content if we didn't have any friends or any followers, yes?

The thing is that, maybe most of us had the wrong notion when we started here - that we drop our content and expect comments and reactions (upvotes) coming. This brought me back to when I was just starting.

Quick Throwback

It was a rough start for me too. Although during that time, it was more of a curiosity, just that the clueless me didn't even bother to check things further. Thought I can just create and share my content in anyway I want and that was okay. While I was reading other people's posts then, I was not even making any comment on them. I often ran out of Resource Credits so I come and go.

For four months (August toward the end of November 2021), I had mostly zero to a few upvotes on my content and there were no engagements in most of them.

It was until a wonderful soul (coquicoin) reached out saying we should learn how things are done and that was what we did. We joined communities, observed things, started interacting, learning, showing up, etcetera. That was when it felt we belonged and started enjoying the process.

So back to the question...

Why is it hard for newbies to get upvotes?

My only answer to that would be because not many people know us when we are new. Unless we have been onboarded by a whale to have at least a smoother start, most of us go through similar process - of having to go out of our way to make our presence felt.

That is why the Cryptomaniacs guys (TM and Jongo) often say on their podcasts that we got to keep showing up.

Getting out there and making noise (and by 'noise' I mean, engaging with other people on their posts. That's how they will get to notice you).

This reminded me of a comment I read many moons ago where a long-term user of Hive (one from The Alliance community if I wasn't mistaken) shared how she got intrigued by a newbie who was asking questions that people do not normally ask. That's when she knew that the newcomer is interested and willing to learn (teachable). So she supported her (upvoting her content, commenting on them and I think she even spared time to tutor the newbie about Hive).

Taskmaster also shared how he noticed some users through their interactions and activities on threads. Thereby earning his upvotes by simply showing up, consistently engaging and creating content.

So what to do?

There is no written rule on what to do but I'm sharing some things below based on my personal experience and observations and it may vary from person to person but the common denominator I guess is one's general activity here on the blockchain.

  • Show up every day

Be present. Enjoy the process of learning things, creating quality content, getting to know other people through their posts, engaging with them not for the sake of being noticed but to build a good network (connection).

I read some people say they set a time going through their notifications and another time to draft and publish their content. I guess it's creating our own strategy on how we do things without having to sacrifice or compromise our real life responsibilities.

  • Be consistent

This is not only my personal experience but it's what I have noticed as well with others. Having consistency in your presence (engagement and in your content).

Sometime ago, someone sent me a direct message asking me what to do so his posts would get upvotes too. I shared to him what I and others are doing - coming to Hive every single day, upvoting and commenting on people's posts, staking HIVE, even joining contests, making friends, creating one post a day etcetera. He was adamant. I sensed through his response that he didn't like it.

Whilst another who asked the same thing on my DM and applied things, stayed consistent in her quality content and engagement, growing her account. And she's doing pretty well up until now.

  • Grow your account

And by that, I mean in various aspects (network/connection/followers, Hive Power). It is quite noticeable that most big curators tend to support those who show they are here for the long run.

Everyone's wallets (Hive accounts) are publicly viewable and although it may not be 100% true to all or most, it is observable that those who are not growing their accounts (no matter how long they have been here), are not getting enough support. Although there might be some exemption. But yes, I've see some 5-year old accounts that are still struggling to date while there are newer accounts that are doing well.

  • Have fun and be open to learning

The thing is if we focus mainly on the rewards, we won't last long. I would probably have gone elsewhere during those four months where my content were getting mostly zero upvotes if I was only thinking about instant gratification. I was curious and I want to learn and they were enough to keep me going.

Yes, we all want to monetize our activities, but we just can't force it.

Final Thoughts

Each one's situation and journey on Hive is different and what I have shared are not by no means rules set in stone. They are those that worked for me and for some people I know. Hive OGs say the same thing. But it's up to you to find out what works best for you.

Or you can also apply them and not try to reinvent the wheel as they say.

TM mentioned yesterday that he treats his Hive account as a business where he got to do all he can to keep it thriving. Perhaps doing the same thing will work too.

And don't lose heart if you are doing everything and still you are not getting the support you expect. It can be frustrating but hang in tight, just keep going, enjoy the process and I believe it will come to you too. A year from now, you would be thankful you didn't quit.

Some great observations but always shows the struggles this platform has. There's a number of reasons I think people new don't get upvotes.

  1. Discoverability on the UI's is extremely hard and honestly most people don't want to read though 10+ posts a day to curate. It's a lot of dang work in terms of time commitment. But not only that it's hard like really hard to find quality good content and work through everything being posted and that's only going to get worse as more people come on.

It's another reason why I like threads as it's quick and the payouts can happen fast including being discovered more easily.

I think it's wrong that people need to jump into discord and other places to start interacting and be noticed that seems like a huge weakness that should be talked about and addressed.

  1. How votes work, by voting on articles from people or even threads that don't get voted by others because again discoverability it also means your own personal curation APR is going to suffer. It's why you see everyone pile on and join curation trails to make sure they are getting the most APR out of their votes.

What does seem to be working best however rolling forward is for those with decent stake in hive I would say 20k + hive powered up onboarding people one by one and casting some votes their way. For sure an area that needs to constantly be worked on but we do have many new introduction methods now like gaming and threads which are great alternatives to just making people come in here and write long posts which many don't want to do.

How votes work, by voting on articles from people or even threads that don't get voted by others because again discoverability it also means your own personal curation APR is going to suffer. It's why you see everyone pile on and join curation trails to make sure they are getting the most APR out of their votes.

This is an extremely outdated statement that no longer applies. (July 2021)
Curation has been linear for quite a long time now. Cursed Aztec Gold

You get 50% curation no matter what you upvote as long that thing doesn't get downvoted and you vote within the first 24 hours.

Other than that great comment... certainly the reason I don't vote new accounts is that frontends offer very piss-poor curation techniques in this regard. We could obviously benefit from some kind of algorithm or perhaps even hire professional curators who's only job is to find this exact type of content so that not everyone has to engage in such monotonous data filtering.

Ah good to know! I didn't know that changed the payout structure. I thought it was still a weighted system. That's very good to know and wonder if many others still have that same idea from the old school days. Thank you for brining it to my attention so I don't make that mistake in what I tell others rolling forward.

Yeah I forget what hardfork that was but they rolled back a ton of the old economic incentives. That hardfork was glorious basically it felt like a lot of my ideas were implemented.

Hardfork 25 Goes off without a Hitch.

Found it...

Yes, you pointed out exactly what new users need to aim for - discoverability. Whilst there are curators going around mainly to find new users and good content, it is simply time-consuming (I say that because I personally read 5-10 or even more long-form articles a day and manually curate). But I don't really go around looking for new users to read and curate and that's one flaw too xD

Like you, I like threads because of what it offers us - getting discovered fast and yes, easy to interact without having to read hundreds of words.

I like the way Leo is doing with the Stake-Based curation. Maybe it could be applied too, specifically for newbies, not based on their stakes but their content quality and interactions?

I think it's wrong that people need to jump into discord and other places to start interacting and be noticed that seems like a huge weakness that should be talked about and addressed.

It would be good if users interact on-chain than anywhere else. Although there are communities that require some presence in Discord (which I personally do not support if it is only meant for one to get his content curated).

I do like your idea of those with decent stakes to cast upvotes to their onboarded users' posts. We know for sure there are things that needed to be done when it comes to curation on Hive and hopefully, these will be discussed and attended to especially when there are many new users coming aboard. Because whether we like it or not, upvotes can be a good way to retain users.

This is golden! It applies to newbies, but anyone can learn from it. I needed to be reminded of this myself as I have slacked off in certain areas.

It's actually weird to see big shots now actually earning little to nothing when they first started. It is just the truth, however; many people here had really humble beginnings, but their work and effort to show up more and keep at being more consistent made the difference indeed.

Very insightful, iFarm. And thank you for enlightening.

Thank you too, for your awesome and kind input. Yes, most of us didn't start that well but we are learning our way through. Dedication and effort do pay :)

This is very relevant and relatable. I will work on your suggestions to get some votes. Thank you so much 😊

That's good to hear. Get involved and you will see the effect afterward :) The idea is to not make the rewards the main focus because one will easily get disappointed.

!PIZZA

I was into rewards in the beginning. I have recently realized that it is more about being present and staying consistent because we are here to grow. Thanks again 😁

I think most of us are :) Glad you did the same realization. You're welcome and yes, let's keep growing - personally and our stacks too, hehe!

Personal growth is what matters the most. It gets reflected in the growth of our stakes too 😁❤️

Oh yes, no doubt about that. 😉

Have a great day 💖

One battle-tested way that we have been doing since the Steemit years is to put our links in the links promotion sections of the Hive communities on Discord that we are members of.

Oh, and glad to see you active today. I will tag you later in a blog I'm posting today.

That is good too, although I have not personally tried dropping my post link in a promotion channel in Discord communities.

I look forward to the mention and thanks in advance :)

Thank you for your kind words, I will definitely ask questions because I have so many of them.

That's good! It's one of the ways we learn :)

Beautiful piece of poetry:

In the world of Hive, where newbies strive,
They wonder why upvotes are so hard to derive.
A question was asked, seeking to uncover,
The secrets behind this uphill endeavor.

Remember, everyone's journey is unique,
What works for one may not work for the meek.
Treat your Hive account like a thriving business,
Keep pushing, keep striving, don't let frustration dismiss.

So newbies, keep pushing, keep showing up,
Engage, learn, grow, and never give up.
The path may be challenging, but the rewards await,
With time and effort, you'll rise above the gate.

Kudos to your brother for guiding and encouraging you well. I think it's good to give ourselves a good reason as to why we are here and that will make the difference especially in times when we are thinking of giving up or questioning things.

All very good advices CJ. When I first joined Hive it seemed daunting and I didn’t understand how to do anything here and also didn’t know anyone. A year later I was on holiday back in Poland and I decided to give it another go. By then more of our common friends were already here and I reached out for advice, as well as when I posted a comment on someone’s article, peeps from the Terminal reached out and I joined their Discord and got lots of helpful tips from them too.
I posted my intro article and then got to reading. I read tons of articles with tips for newbies and applied each one, while some good practices I already gained from read cash.

In short - just like you said here. Being present, interacting and staking is the way to go 💙

Thank you @ifarmgirl. I have expected this breakdown since. I too wondered why my contents aren't getting upvotes. Some said until I have upto a thousand LEO Power before my contents would be considered for curation. Is that really true? I love reading others posts and commenting myself.
Infact, the issue of lack of upvotes has been discouraging me sometimes from publishing.

You're welcome and when we are new, our content are not easily discovered that is why we need to do something about it.

Some said until I have upto a thousand LEO Power before my contents would be considered for curation.

This is only specific for the Stake-Based Curation on Leo. You can read more about it on @leo-curation page.

Infact, the issue of lack of upvotes has been discouraging me sometimes from publishing.

I understand the feeling, but if you focus on that, you will most certainly be disappointed. The harsh reality is that we don't just post and expect upvotes to come. I do see you post two times a day😉

Please thank you for the explanation. But I could post on the community once daily and that won't be offensive. I don't usually do two, it's the timing. Sometimes one could be late night the previous day while the other comes the next day. That difference in time interval could make them look like in the same day.

That's okay. I just stated the fact that you are posting twice daily which shows you are not discouraged as you mentioned earlier :)

Perhaps you can also try to increase your engagement with other people, not only in your own post but in theirs. It is very noticeable that you quite lack it. 😉

nice content, consistency and engagement just like you said is very important, most newbies neglect some of these things you discussed here, so thanks for writing about this, this will educate them.

Many thanks, I appreciate your kind remarks. I do hope it is helpful to some :)

I loved this post it is very enlightening, I am a newbie and yes sometimes you get a little frustrated but personally I think a blog is made to be read, I have always thought that each publication should have a counter of each person who visited it and thus know how many people read you, I think it is a motivation apart from the votes.
I for example would be happy if I see that they read my poems even if I don't win, I only mean the poems hehehehehehe.

Thank you :) And I'm glad you find it enlightening. When we create content, we want people to read them and yes, there is a "view counter" on Peakd where you can see how many views a post has including the comments in it.

Excuse my ignorance I am on the main page of Hive or so I think and in Eccency in the application, I have to register in Peakd? or just enter with my password? and excuse my ignorance.

There are different content/blogging frontends (interfaces) in Hive:

You can login to any of them using your account and posting key (password) or Hivesigner and Keychain.

Thank you very much, you are very kind

You're welcome . And do not hesitate to ask if you have questions :)

My advise to every newbie is to learn how to engage well and that is why it is important to have enough Hive Power so they can engage as much as they want with people
If they do so, there is no way they won't be getting upvotes even though it may not be frequent

Yes, that too. Building one's account HP for more RCs and curation rewards as well. Thank you for your inputs !LADY😍

Ako sa Dbuzz talaga nagsimula, nagtake a break ng medyo matagal, hanggang naenjoy ko na. Hehe

Glad you came back from your break and are now staying hehe.

Wish I had discovered such a post when I was a newbie. I definitely agree that activity, consistency and engagement/enjoy it are the most important. About 'growing your account', it's something I've never be sure about if it's true or not. Although the last couple of weeks, as I've become more active, I saw it mentioned a couple of times. So I guess it should be true..

Another important aspect I'm often telling newbies is to search for one or more communities which are attractive to you. Everyone has his interests and for me it really helped to join a couple of communities as it's easier to get to know that selected subgroup of the whole group of Hive. If you understand what I mean :)

Really a fantastic article, shared it in the hope a lot of new people can find it.
#freecompliments

We discover things as we go along and although we didn't know these when we started, we are learning hehe.

As to growing account, it's just my observation. And also read some people mentioning it. It may not be true to everyone but it is quite easy to check. You will be able to notice that those who have large stakes (and still building), no matter the quality and length of their content are mostly greatly supported. Compare it to one that has a really great content but has less HP staked (especially if he keeps withdrawing his rewards) and you will see the difference. The good thing is that Leo has certain curation methods that go beyond just stakes.

to search for one or more communities which are attractive to you.

I totally agree. One of the first best things to do. It helps us find the place that makes us feel comfortable, meet people and then we can explore further afterward.

Thank you kindly, for your inputs (and for sharing).😉

Definitely true!

I heard it a couple of times as well and indeed sometimes observe that accounts with higher reputation / Hive power / connections / followers get indeed big upvotes although their quality isn't always better when compared to newer accounts. Is it because of the higher hp? Maybe. Is it because of another reason, could be as well. Only saying, I don't know it myself. Although I heard it a couple of time that staked hp is important for curators as you mentioned as well.

Thanks to you for the great article! ;D
#freecompliments

Yes. The thing is those accounts have built their network and because most large accounts follow curation trails so they do not necessarily read content when they upvote. New people have to fight for attention through their activities so that active whales will notice them.

Thank you too for your valuable contribution :)

Yes I am a newbie too and it's so hard to get any recognition, interactions here. Twitter are so much easier in terms of discussion. My last thought would be people nowadays will not spend the time to read 20 long blogs for a day (they read threads instead)

The good thing is that we have Threads here, check it out on https://leofinance.io/threads

It works like Twitter. Do let me know if you have questions.

Or there is also Ecency Waves (similar to threads).

There was a long time user who came to me sometimes ago, asking how I do get much upvotes and comments on my post, I decided to check his account and he was even here before me but noticed that he kept withdrawing and powering down his Hive. I had to let him know Hive supports those who are true to the system. You have to have the mindset of a long term here, engage and interact with other people, only by then would you enjoy this platform. The last time I checked, he hasn't been active.

The best thing is to keep showing up. I knew how I started with no upvotes at all and now, things are different. Showing up and being consistent helped me so far. You have to be willing to learn and grow your account.
These are lovely tips from you. Thanks for sharing.

It's funny when people do that. Like what have you done that I didn't? Well, our activities are seen onchain.

It's a matter of how we look at Hive as it determines our actions.

Thank you lots, PB for your insightful inputs :)

It's common sense but sometimes, we make things complicated hehe.

I also want to remind new users to find communities and creators to follow, and make comments. Not just "nice post" or "follow me," but serious engagement with their content. Create conversations! Be the kind of follower you would want to have for your own posts.

Yes. yes. Thank you for that. Simply saying "nice post" isn't engagement but kind of spamming. Some still do those things now. Hope they do learn to improve and do better.

I think current newbies are lucky compared to us because in the current time there are ongoing many projects to support newbies. Besides some whales are supporting them and keeping them motivated. It's wasn't so easy like now.

That's right, Inti. And glad we are still here despite the challenges we faced. It is nice that this time, there is a variety of support for newbies and hopefully, it gets even better.

I agree 100%. I went though the same when I was a newbie. But not getting upvotes made me more curioius of hive that I get "obsessed" about the platform and how it works. 😅 I read more and that's when I learned more...

Aha! That's how to take a challenge. You pushed to learn instead of getting disappointed :) I love that!

Good to read your thoughts on experience. Things I should really follow!

In the previous months, as far as I understand, I posted about traveling and my family.
Someone gave me many downvote saying that my posts are not of good quality.
I didn't do any fault, but after it felt like a shot, I was afraid to try and post it.

I'm sorry to hear of your experience but because quality of content is subjective and it depends on how people see it. Although there seems to be some basic requirement for a post to be considered quality by most. And that includes the length of post, the quality of photos attached or citing sources if they are not your own something like that.

Don't be afraid to try again :) Find a community where you feel at home or comfortable, observe how they do things, then apply things you see are good.

Your patience and guidance is invaluable to me.

But I will continue. Thanks.

Those posts you shared are okay, but they are very short and may also need to improve formatting. I learned before that we should have at least 300 words when we create a post (excluding translations). Maybe that is the reason why they got downvoted.

And yes, continue to create content. Improve the format, make the post longer.

It is true that it is very difficult for a deputy to get votes here, he has to work for a long time, the way I have been working here for ten months now and I have worked very hard Now people have started getting coming over my post.

So now you have proven the same thing, that we need to do what is needed :) Kudos to you for keeping on.

Thank you lots, I appreciate the support :)

Thank you for sharing this insightful post! Your journey on Hive, especially the part about your initial struggles and eventual growth, is both relatable and inspiring. You have actually spoken well and your advice to the newbies is so inspiring. Thanks for always inspiring others to be a better version of themselves.

Thank you too. I'm glad to read you find it insightful and inspiring. I do hope it helps in a way.

Sure it has, and will still be, bcos learning continues everyday

enjoyable read! But thought I'd add my own thoughts:

Ultimately, something I've always pointed out, is that the vast majority of people hate blogging. And dislike reading even more.

The monetary incentive here naturally brings people who make themselves believe it's something they enjoy, but they don't. Blogging was never a mainstream activity and when it becomes big, it invariably leads to people basically falling into ecommerce or some kind of product selling. Look at Medium nowadays, it's 99% chatGPT content and circle jerks to get around the algorithm to maximize profits. The content is utter trash. 80% of it is 'how to get money on medium' followed by the same points you bring up here.

Simply put, if you don't enjoy blogging for the sake of blogging, you aren't gonna get anywhere. If you do, then the above points you lay out will come naturally, I reckon

Thank you for your awesome inputs and I agree, people won't last long if they do not enjoy creating long content.

I quite agree that not many people like to read let alone write long-form content or blogs. But the stats show that the numbers are increasing, of content being created and comments being made. Perhaps the rewards have something to do with that or people might be making Hive their social media.

We do hope Hive content creators won't succumb into putting out utterly trash content because that would truly be saddening.

I do like the short-form or microblogging feature called Threads in LeoFinance where users can interact with others easily and quickly without having to read hundreds of words :)

Yeah I'm just finding out about threads and ecency's version i think called 'waves'? Cool idea!

Yes, Ecency Waves is cool too. It is nice that these features exist.
