What Are You Living For?

One of our most distinguishing characteristics as humans is the practice of "overplanning". We often imagine numerous possibilities and scenarios, as well as reactions to those possibilities. We mostly do this to plan how we want our lives to turn out. For example, a person might plan their life in this manner. They may say, "If I finish school at 25, I can get a job at 26, buy my first car at 28, marry at 29, have two children, and retire at 45." This may appear to be genius planning at times, but it is usually a shallow way of underestimating life's uncertainties.

Some of the life plans we consider to be pure ingenuity are simply the result of ignorance, or an oversight of life's complexity. The majority of what we consider to be simple is simply something we do not understand. People believe that things they do not understand cannot happen to them, but this is false. Life has shown that it has no respect for anyone. Some people say, "I am too young to be broke, I am too young to be sick and bedridden, I am too beautiful to be single, or I am too intelligent to be failing in life."

What we do not understand is that there is no causality or purpose to how people's lives unfold. When I was younger, I thought only the elderly had high blood pressure, but I discovered I had some of the highest blood pressure when I was in my mid-20s. Life does not wait for people to reach a certain life parameter or condition before it happens to them, which is why we should not believe that certain things will never happen to us. Keeping this in mind reduces your proclivity for excessive planning.

Some people have flawless plans, but life intervenes. It simply means that what we consider to be perfect and solid can be altered or destroyed by life itself. It was similar to how the Titanic was not designed to sink, but the people who built it did not consider what caused it to sink.
People do not, however, intentionally underestimate life; rather, they do so due to inexperience and a limited perspective. One's point of view can be skewed by their perception of life, which is why we must look at life from various angles in order to truly learn lessons that will not be handed to us on a silver platter.

There are few certainties in life, but the fact that we mostly live repetitive lives gives us a sense of continuity. People who have grown accustomed to a consistent, unchanging pattern in their lives tend to overplan. People who have been through the thick and thin are more wary of life; they have seen both the good and the bad, making it difficult to maintain a stable mindset or outlook on life.

There are people who planned to become wealthy with their current jobs, but lost them along the way, then got another job and lost it due to unfortunate circumstances. It will be difficult for them to see longevity in whatever jobs they take on in the future, because they have learned that no matter how solid their plans are, they still need a lot of factors beyond their control to work in their favor. In reality, there are few things over which we have control, but we frequently believe that what we can control in life outweighs what we cannot.

Setting Risky Timelines

Some people feel in control of their lives because they are fortunate. However, we truly do not have control over the majority of the things we have been fortunate enough to possess, and the moment we begin to lose these things, we begin to truly understand. We are excellent learners, but we learn best through experience, which means that we wait for things to happen to us before learning. There are people who understand the dangers and toxicity of alcohol.

They know the people it has ruined, but they say things like, "Oh, when I reach 40, I will stop drinking and live a healthy life." They say this without checking their status, believing that because they are not exhibiting any symptoms, they are fine.

In Conclusion

Overplanning makes it difficult to see the current risks and uncertainties. We mostly look forward to the future while remaining uncertain about the present. Overplanning has serious consequences; unless we understand how it can go wrong, it is difficult to change one's tactics and approach to life. People lose everything they have worked so hard to build, or they die just as they are about to start enjoying what they have created.

Knowing that you may not be able to enjoy the things you have created after they have been built makes you appreciate life. It is critical to learn life's most profound lessons in order to adopt a new perspective and redefine what we are truly living for.

*The Bible" in Proverb 3:5 says lean on the Lord and trust not in your own understanding. Our understanding can be mostly logical, but life can present an illogical from, it's clear the why the word of God's say we cannot even trust in the things we understand. This only means our knowledge and understanding will be forever limited to what we can only apply logic to.

Something I have learned from my work is that I don't control project. All I can do is put the pieces together, nudge, and take a few actions. Ultimately, it is others who do the work to complete the project. I rely the skills of others to make things happen on time. But there is always the possibility that circumstances will prolong a project.

For example, I had to repair some storm damage to a roof. I got the initial estimate and started the repairs. As it turned out the damage was largely due to a structural weakness that would have to be fixed first. The price quadrupled and the timeline extended. The contractors were ready to do the work. However, we were on hold for weeks while we tried to get the insurance to cover the cost and sought approvals from our Board of Directors. If I had to give a time estimate, I would have been wrong so many times.

I think the same happens in life. We rely on so many others for our plans to come to fruition. We can have a general direction, but we will often face little detours on the road to completion.

A realistic picture of how we mostly cannot control things that are largely dependent on other life parameters to work out. I can relate with your work situation. I think being used to such experience has made you learn that sometimes it's out of our hands and we cannot really make it work. It's not like there's nothing we can be right about, it's just that there are so many things we might have thought would work according to how we want it, but it just turned out that we could have been wrong so many times. It's a lesson that comes with experiential knowledge.

Thank you for the comment.

The best laid plans of mice and men... they almost never workout. It's good to have goals and direction, but sometimes you have to roll with the punches life doles out.

And hearing someone say they will quit drinking at 40 is hilarious, it just won't happen! Health problems can sneak up on you at any age, I developed high blood pressure in my thirties, so I understand that frustration all too well! Great post as always!

I developed high blood pressure in my mid 20s and my chronic illness in general has redefined my ideology about life in general. I know people who think their bad eating habit will not affect them because they're not old, and before they get old that's when they'll stop.

Bad diet can catch up with you very young! Too much salt and fat are very unhealthy. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure in the military, and I was in good shape at the time. We're all mortal...

True, but still a lot of people are ignorant, calls it old people sickness. Ignorance is deadly

It really can be!

Life has no respect for anyone and that’s why it can fvck anyone up anytime. People who overplan their lives always want everything to come out perfect which may not always be so
It’s good to plan but overplanning is a no no

I have a theory. Place everything in the hands of the Almighty because He's the only one who isn't uncertain. Life in itself is generally uncertain

When we underestimate life, it always leads to something we can never think of. Just as you've said;

Life has shown that it has no respect for anyone.

Life doesn't care maybe you are young or old, when it has one's time, it dishes out the best goodies in health, wealth and a lot of other things.

Exactly, it has no respect for anyone and anything at all can happen to anyone. I just feel that we're living at the mercy of the things we don't know and have control over. If God doesn't plan or guard someone, then whatever one is doing is actually in vain.

Yes, we sure are, which is why we need to thread carefully. That's right, God always needs to be put first.

Plans are just plans and it doesn't always play out the way you want. I think that is why people should be revising their plans and how to reach it as things change in society. I also think having an extra buffer such as an emergency fund is important because it gives you more control.

Well irrespective of money, I generally feel that overplanning is underestimating life in general and can lead to disastrous outcomes

This kind of situation does happen to me from time to time, years ago I would get mad every time things dont go as planned but now days Im more flexible and try to adapt at the same time trying to stay cool because you cant think well and take decisions when you are frustrated, some times I just let things slide and work on them latter on, mental health is so important, life itself at times is frustrating

When things don't go well of course, it makes us upset, especially when we think the plan is full proof and nothing can actually go wrong, we're actually not as Smart or perfect as we think we are, sometimes we basically just rely on luck for things to go our way
