My LCS Pirate Haul for July 2022 – 2009 Canada $8 Maple of Wisdom

Every time I plan a trip to my favorite Local Coin Store (LCS) I keep a few objectives in mind; the primary objective is to acquire at least one sovereign minted silver bullion coin to add to my core stack as the ongoing part of my Stacking plan. Secondary objective; is to acquire a minimum of two dollars face value of junk silver in prepping for emergency commerce. And my tertiary objective is to indulge on a coin that lights my fire, something that expresses my collecting style or resonates with my cultural heritage which brings me to this gorgeous coin.

First, the Star Coin of this Post.

As some of you may know that I have Chinese roots through my grandmothers side of the family tree so I have been exploring that aspect embracing those cultural roots in my collecting and stacking activities.

2008 saw the Royal Canadian Mint produced a plethora of Chinese dragon themed coins and this 2009 $8 coin seemed an after though for 2009. This coin was actually issued 2010. The big red Swarovski element crystal is the eye catcher dead center on the reverse requiring a High Relief capsule to accommodate the crystal. The hologram Maple is clutched by the dragon in place of a pearl as in the original myth. The pearl represents wisdom, a virtue of great value and guarded by the dragon, hence the Maple of Wisdom.

Primary Objective, for my core Stack

Though I have grossly overpaid in the premium I had to chip away at my under-weighing of my US Silver component. I've only bought 2 coins out the shop's fresh Silver eagle stock.

Having long completed my Core goal I just tweak here and there. My core Stacking continues for extended family until wake up to reality, my distant US Cousins can thank me later.

Secondary objective, Emergency Commerce money

I expected to pickup 30 silver Bluenose dimes. The coin dealer was apologetic having sold off all his silver dimes as a consequence of the recent steep drop in silver price. What was left were some quarters and the dollars that had an extra $1 premium above other junk silver.

Now with that objective out of the way, I am left with enough fiat cash to get the next numismatic piece of history.

The Bonus Silver Coin

Quite plain looking, but this little coin is a filler for an incomplete set of Newfoundland coins back in day, before 1949, when this province was an independent country. A coin set that my father has never completed in his collecting days. Just the basic Pre-confederation set rather than the whole 140 in total.

An interesting footnote is the economic and political turmoil caused by Newfoundland’s two major banks, the Commercial and Union Banks in 1894. With the Newfoundland government in debt, it was helpless in addressing the economic woes among the growing ranks of unemployed and business closures. The Bank directors were arrested on conspiracy and larceny charges, $1.2 million in banknotes became worthless. 6,000 people in the city of St. Johns alone were unemployed.

Private savings and business accounts saw big cuts in value. Even England could no longer extend credit to Newfoundland since it no longer had a stable currency and as expected Newfoundland defaulted on the interest payment on it’s public debt.

With relief coming in the form of Canadian chartered banks intervening, prudent capital financing, and following a good season of fishing and seal hunting the economic damage was on it’s way to restoration.

A result was that very little Newfoundland coinage flowed outside this coastal country as her citizens hoarded their silver and gold coinage. For the following decades most people had little trust in their paper currency.

Alas, my LCS visit has again emptied my wallet of fiat cash except for my parking change and so my post must come to a happy close.

I wish that this LCS was much closer to where I live. 😞

At least Newfoundland crutched on Canadian currency while things got hammered out. Zimbabwe used the South African Rand and other adjacent currencies to function for example. But when the US dollar does the same there will be no place to take cover when everything is denominated in the USD. Its time for the average Joe to wake up.

One thing I guess noticed is that our generation actually prefer silver coin much more than gold coin

Gold is obviously more costly than silver and at the same time silver coin is much more available, affordable and advantageous in different forms, designs and denominations.
Then again, there hasn't been such an enormous variety of silver product available in the market before either.

I knew you would. This piece was designed for the Chinese market hence the reason for the late issue as I think a portion of these coins were set aside for Chinese officials that came to the 2010 Vancouver Olympic winter games and Vancouver having a large Chinese community. The original issue price was $88.88 CAD.

20 Cents 1888 is nice coin and sturdy coin in your possesion, H stands for Heaton's Mint, UK. Congrats for completing Newfoundland collection.

haha, I had hard time finding E Pluribus Unum on the right wing of the Eagle, first I thought did they miss it engraving those Latin word. Nah! clever.

I knew I should have took the Eagles out of their capsules before I took the snap shot. I was in a rush to get this post up and ready for today but that was being lazy and sloppiness on my part. Taking short cuts.
The Eagle would worth more as a 'Mottoless' Strike error if that were true. But realistically impossible to happen without deliberate actions.

Getting more Voyager silver dollars?
I would prefer the silver Bluenose 10 Cents but these two big coins were practically uncirculated and so shiny that I bought them since this shop was located beyond my range and I can't visit as often as I would like.

The failure of Newfoundland's Commercial and Union banks coupled with government debt is another example of the superiority of gold and silver coin over fiat banknotes. The bank's directors were covering up losses and poor management decisions for some time leading up to the collapse.

I don't get to this Coin shop often enough requiring the better part of the day so I have to make the best of my time. I was worth the time talking to and getting to know the dealer who gave me the story of the collapse of the Newfoundland banks in 1894. History lesson from a coin dealer.

This elegant piece of music is playing in my headset just as I was replying to your comment.

My father worked as a cook working almost full time not as well as my Mom's income so she became the main bread winner. I spent more time with my father as a result and I became closer to him than my Mom even if he couldn't sew if his life depended on it. But I learned cooking fine and he often shared his interest in coins that he got from his grandfather.

To me it was all the treasure in the world when I put on the little pirate hat and sit next to him and played with the silver dollars. While his income didn't afford him much in new additions often he got what he could afford.

Every time I add to his unfinished collection I feel that a part of him is still here among the coins and memories with me approving my new coin purchase and remembering his stories.

I got 101 Hive set aside for #hpud, I may not have enough free time to do a post but I can still participate.

Those are beautiful. What is a high relief capsule? Just a thicker coin casing?

It's difficult to see from the edge while in the capsule but the gem adds another 3mm thickness above the surface of this coin's reverse. A deeper non-standard capsule had to made to accommodate the added depth by the gem, higher relief.
A coin of this quality I dare not remove it from it's protective capsule.

Okay, so which coins can you remove? I have taken all of mine out and felt them, flipped them, etc. I keep them in the cases they came in but I didn't realize there was a problem with taking some out. I will be more careful in the future. I have a yin yang coin that I carry in my pocket sometimes but it was given as a gift to carry and keep me grounded. It was blemished when I got it.
