Piratesunday: 2010 Republic of Benin 1000 Franc La Santissima Trinidad Silver Coin

”Blackbirds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

She was officially named Nuestra Señora de la Santísima Trinidad, Santissma Trinidad for short. And while her contemporary the HMS Victory and Admiral Lord Nelson took all the glory, the Flagship Santissima Trinidad, pride of the Spanish Mediterranean fleet gets a few mentions in naval history, perhaps a mention as a Trivial Pursuit answer, but most of all remembered for her defeat at Trafalgar.

While history celebrates and commemorates The HMS Victory on at least 28 Coins by 13 countries, the Santissima Trinidad is commemorated by the Republic of Benin on a gold and silver coin and you’re looking at the lone silver coin.

The Coin.

The Record.

The First rate Santissima Trinidad had a respectable service history since her launch in Havana Cuba int 1769. A big 4,905 Tons and 200 ft long, intimidating with 116 guns to start, making her the largest War ship in the world at the time.

In 1779 she joined France in support of the American Colonist in the American War of Independence.
In 1780 she took part in the capture of 55 ships of an escorted English fleet.
In 1782 she joined the Mediterranean squadron and took part in the siege of Gibraltar and the battle of Cape Spartel.
In 1795 she was upgraded to a fourth gun deck and 140 Guns.
In 1797 she was heavily damaged in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent and nearly captured by the British.

The Stats.

  • Class: 140 Gun, First rate

  • Crew: 1,050
  • Homeport: Cadiz

In 1805 under the command of Captain Francisco Javier Uriarte and Rear Admiral Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros the Spanish-Franco fleet battled the smaller British fleet in the Battle of Trafalgar. Rather than conventional Line battle, Admiral Nelson ordered the British into two columns and ‘T-bone’ their opponent’s fleet in two. With the resulting chaos, several British ships including the HMS Victory assailed the Spanish lead ships. The Santissima Trinidad was heavily damaged, captured and eventually scuttled northwest of Cadiz.

Sadly, even in this reincarnated mockup form, the 2006 Santissima Trinidad doesn’t get much respect as a Club 1805 Entertainment ship.

So, a big ship is not always better. Some Spanish officers have also nicknamed her El Ponderoso because of her being too top heavy with poor sailing and maneuvering characteristics which were likely contributing factors in her defeat to the British.

And that is why the Bloody Raven prefer the more agile Brigantine or light Frigate to ply her pirate ninja style of stacking booty.

At an LCS price of $35 CAD, I think I found a prize of an obscure coin.

It’s been difficult to find data on the minting statistics of this Benin Republic coin. There is no listing of this coin in Numista.com either. Some eBay seller sources quote different purity of 925 rather than 999. Similar Benin commemorative strikes range around 5000 coins. Minting might be by the Paris mint, so rather grasping at straws, I say it is time to invest in a Krause Coin catalog, the coin bible.

And I remember spending Monday nights watching TV with my Father with my toy stuffies.
And he loved the old movies.

Nice coin you ninja pirate you

Wasn't a bad choice even after thedamus had already cleaned out all the 1949 Canadian Silver dollars. (The Matthew ship, Newfoundland)

Thanks @silverd510 ☠️

Awesome find, sis!!!!
I learn so much about ships from you.
Much hugs, kisses and love 😍

It may make a great answer to a Jeopardy question too.
"Ships of the Line for 500. Alex."
"The answer is...Adm. Nelson faced this huge ship at Trafalgar."

(Crickets)

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

You found treasure at your Local Coin shop @kerrislravenhill!🤗 Proof grade for $35 CAD...nice my friend!!
A very nice touch with the colored compass!!

I get the feeling this coin is somewhat rare with no record of one on eBay or Numista. Found a pair of similar sister coins as if part of a Series; HMS Victory (Who would have guessed) and the HMS Bounty.
What fun coins to discover at the LCS.

Thanks @silvertop

This just in, The Mayflower is the 4th of the series.

Every once in a while you hit pay-dirt.......Congratulations @kerrislravenhill!🤗

Nonetheless, a very cool coin to have. I like the color on the compass. I really need to find some pirate silver coins/rounds sometime in the future.

Thanks for sharing and have a blessed week @kerrislravenhill!🤗💜🌻

The Compass is a nice touch.
And a fine add to my pirate stack.
This coin has to be rare if I can't find it on eBay, Numista or anywhere else on the internet.
Stacking Pirate Silver, tis nae fer the faint of heart ☠️ but for the Adventuring soul.

Thanks @elizabethbit

You bet sis!💜🤗🌻

Wow, the detail on that ship is amazing. And the color compass is nice too.

Hello I am Fallowing you now to help support the Canada front end on Hive, a room which you have joined. I hope to interact more and soon in the room.
That is quite the hull of Booty you got there. They could be worth a lot more if you set the price on those that cannot be found. Sell some and then send some BEE to get the front end of Canada up and going ahaha. Thanks for showing your coins.

The bulk of my booty is silver Canadian coinage, a collection that I built on since passed to me from my late Father. I save primarily in bullion since there is no safe place to invest anymore in the financial markets. Crypto is my second choice as an off the grid asset class.

No need to sell. I think I can swap a few spare hive.swap for some HE Bee and I understand there may be a Maple Token in the works as well. But I'll need to get up to speed on these.

Yes, diversify is the best type of way to invest. I agree the stock market is and has been garbage red bars for three years now over all.
The best investment you can make is in yourself and mind. I know it has payed off for me in the years i have been here.
Thanks for sharing those beauty sliver stacks, keep em coming.
The Canadian community is trying to get thousands of BEE to get it higher off the ground. I need to move some things around to help with this. Lots in the works and it is starting to take shape.
Have you heard of : https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/
He is ab it collector of coins you might get some useful information from.

I am familiar with Martin Armstrong when he had a seminar here in Vancouver quite s few years ago. He is gold savvy and had fascinating predictive model on gold that the US Govt got interested in too.
Thousands? I have about 4 BEE in my HE.

That seminar must have been insightful. Was it?
Yes i remember hearing reading about what he went through and still going through with Sororities.
I only have a few BEE as well...any bit helps it seems. There are not a lot of member is the Canadian room so the task is larger that is before us all.
How is the seawall?

If you're talking about the Stanley Park Seawsll, Last fall was a Coyote warning when these creatures are attacking pedestrians on the trails and along a stretch of the Sea wall. And a fall Storm bought down a few trees along the Seawall temporarily closing auto and pedestrian access. Lots of Covid 19 signs warning pedestrians and any tourists to comply social distancing rules.

There was some wave that knocked a section of it out...you know global change in weather as they like to say and not just that weather continues as it always has and the waves keep rolling in as they have for long time. Nature is the cure, family community and being close will set us free of all this. I hope you are well in this.

This is an amazing post in regards to the effort and research you put into it. The coins are great, but really it is amplified by all the information attached to them. All that history and detail.

It would be awesome if this information could never be lost and encoded somehow into the coin like a minted NFT. All the information, background, and detail really brings life to what these coins mean.

Great job!

I just love theme collecting coins with sailing ships and then doing a bit of research on them. Many famous ships do have a contemporary replica made for a special event, movie production or tourist attraction.
The over-designed Santissima reminds me of another badly over-designed vessel, the 1628 Swedish Vasa which sank at the start of it's maiden voyage.
