I get what you're saying and I understand where the name came from and how it could have been named after other explorers. I don't have a problem with the fact that the continents have the American name. My thought is more that if you go anywhere in the world and someone says America or American the thought goes to the U.S.
There are like 23 countries within the American continents but only one comes into thought when the word is mentioned.
