Why Do So Many People Call The U.S. "America"?

in LeoFinance3 years ago

So many people all over the World call the U.S. "America" and I don't see why one country can be considered America when there are so many countries between North, South and Central America.

When I am asked about my country I say I am from the U.S., I don't think of myself any more american then any of the other countries involved on these continents.

These are just my thoughts and I consider myself American but to me all of the countries should also consider themselves American. Here in the U.S. we are part of America but by no means are we "America" and the World should look at all the countries on these continents as American and not just one.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Named after Amerigo Vespucci. But it could so easily have been called Columbia (for the whole hemisphere, not just one country). Or maybe Erikssonia 😉

But all of these explorers met some locals (Leif Eriksson had the best name for them, though - skraelings ), so someone else discovered the place first. Perhaps we should just call it Clovisia, or maybe East Beringia....

I get what you're saying and I understand where the name came from and how it could have been named after other explorers. I don't have a problem with the fact that the continents have the American name. My thought is more that if you go anywhere in the world and someone says America or American the thought goes to the U.S.

There are like 23 countries within the American continents but only one comes into thought when the word is mentioned.

Thanks for commenting and giving me your thoughts on the matter.

It's like saying "South Africa", that is, the region but people think you're referring to the country "South Africa".

The name simply sticks to what comes up most in conversations of which, in this case, U.S.A does, so people wierdly chose to leave the U.S out when referring to the country and simply say "America".

Don't know if that makes sense?

It's true, when someone mentions South Africa to me the first thing I think of is the country and not the region.

It's pretty much the same thing and I get it, it is a mouthful to say it all out like, United States of America, but when the word America comes up anywhere in the world the thought always goes to the U.S.

I don't know, it's not like a big thing really, I just wanted to see what other people thought about the question.

Few things people often confuse.
U.S - America.
Even most people don't know that Brazil, Argentina, uruguay, where most famous footballers comes from is also America.

That's what I'm trying to say, all of these countries are on an American continent but when the word "America" is mentioned pretty much world wide only one country comes to mind.

Thanks for your thoughts and comment.

Kind of a late reply, but I think it happened as an abbreviation to the United States of America .. America for short. I agree it's sort of annoying, but no other North or South American countries have America in their name, so I can see how it became habitual :)
