Now I see it. I did finish my diploma in Udine and was traveling sometimes to Gorica and Koper. :)

We use to buy jeans and coffee in Udine and Gorica while was still YU. One kg of coffee per month was allowed, but only for the people living 10 km from the border. They mark down that in your passport. Crazy times.

My parents had an Italian friend who had a girlfriend in our city. He was allowed to enter East Block because he was in the Italian Communist party. He smuggled us a color TV and some jeans together with the good coffee. That was gold in dealing with authorities. Real tough times.
After 1994 some of our relatives had modified Dacias with 200L reservoirs smuggling in petrol into Serbia as there was none due to the embargo. As you say, crazy times.

I see. That's far away from where I live. I'm near the border with Serbia and the closest town is Kladovo. We're actually divided by the Danube.

Where are you from in the ex-YU space. I was born and raised about 80 km near the Yugo border (20 km to Hungary). The area is developing, but it is developing different.

Slovenia has the best outcome, being one of the high-tech manufacturing countries for Western Europe. Croatia has tourism that is growing steadily like Montenegro. Bosnia some tourism and it is struggling.
Serbia has managed to develop the highway network and some industry as labor is very cheap.
North Macedonia is growing in manufacturing in the automotive industry, but far from Serbia.
Kosovo is very poor and does not manage to use it's richness in natural resources.
Main problem for Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia and Kosovo have the disadvantage of using the Cyrillic alphabet, which hems investors.

It has potential, with a lot of risk due to the ethnic tensions, but still in a strong growing phase. Endemic corruption is still a risk.If I would to buy something,I would go for places on the Adriatic coast.
