I had two thoughts that popped out while reading the post. The first quickly disappeared while I was reading 😂
I agree with your argument on boredom. I never have time to get bored once I was exposed to TV and internet. I remember the time in the 90s when there were fewer options and long free time, I used to use my head a lot. What I mean is I used to engaged with myself and think about things inside my head in an organic way. You do not do that while your mind is occupied by the constant stream of information or video on tv/internet.
What that did to me was, I stopped thinking. These days, I only think when I really need to come up with an idea while dealing with a policy issue. And, that requires me to scratch my head, detached myself with this constant feed of information and invite boredoem. Then only I can be creative, So, yes boredom does trigger creating thinking for me. I am not sure how other function.
I still don't remember the first thing that popped. It was something on investment. But, gone.

Most of mine disappear while writing!! :D
This is exactly the problem. How can we change or invent if we do not have the space to think organically? We live in completely engineered worlds thinking we are thinking.
I think most do this these days - but isn't thinking a process or skill that can be improved with practice? If only using it when needed, is it as effective?
It is not effective at all. I spent twice as much time in processing the information and coming up with right ideas to project. That's why I agree with you that we need to get rid of the information overload and allow ourselves to get bored. That way, we are offloading junk from our brain.
I think we need to practice in focusing on things that really matter to us which will ultimately hone our skill.
Yep - I see boredom as some kind of cleansing process - a meditation of sorts.
