Hive: Monthly Distribution Report Through 9/30/2020: A Whale Making A Huge Move

in LeoFinance4 years ago

For about two years, I did a monthly report on Steem called "STEEM: Whales Are Losing Their Power....The System Is Not Broken". This took a look at how the distribution of Steem Power changed on a monthly basis. The presumption on there was that the Whales were just getting more powerful when the reality showed the exact opposite. When it came to Steem Power, over a two years period of time, things were flattening out.

Of course, we know that Steemit Inc selling part of the stake each month had a lot to do with it. Unfortunately, as we found out, not enough was sold.

I decided to bring this report over to Hive so that we can monitor how things are going. I am going to use the first chart I have from Steem as the initial basis since Hive has its roots there. The chart is pertinent for all categories other than the Whales since we know that is much different than on Hive due to Steemit Inc.

These are the numbers through September 30, 2020.

Each month I monitor what is going on with new accounts and the amount of MVests in each category. I do this to determine what trends are taking place.

Now that we are at end of month, time to post the numbers again.

I want to thank @arcange for the work done each day compiling these numbers and making the charts.

We will be showing 3 months worth of data for analysis purposes to see how the 90 trend might be.

The first chart is from August of 2017, the month I started on Steem. It is placed here to provide some contrast to see how things are changing over a longer period of time.

Here is the breakdown.

This month certainly saw a couple of situations taking place that could be affecting the Hive Power distribution.

The first was that a Whale made a huge move, powering up over 1 million HIVE (it might have been done twice). This really tilted things in the favor of the Whales. As we can see from the number of accounts, they added 2 more Whales this month.

At the next level, the Orcas added accounts but lost in total MVests. This is not surprising since the number of accounts did not come close to replacing what was lost. With a net gain of 4 accounts, this will not offset losing two to "graduation".

Another event that took place was the popularity of wLEO. With the introduction of that project, it is possible that many accounts, especially smaller ones, used Hive to acquire LEO and participate in the Liquidity Pool on Ethereum. At the same time, even if one did not opt for that path, many were purchasing LEO from Hive-Engine, broadcasting a destination for one's HIVE.

This could be a situation that we see ongoing. As user get more options with their HIVE other than selling or powering up, they could find paths to better returns in those other areas. We could see things reverse if there are some serious paydays arriving from some of the layer 2 applications.

Here is something that we can monitor going forward. We can now see people who have more in their Hive-Engine accounts than they do in Hive.

On July 31, 2020,the Whales and Orcas had 174,163 MVests (65.64% of the total), an increase of .29%; on August 31, 2020, 172,279 MVests (65.48% of the total); on September 30, 2020, 177,255 MVests (66.16% of the total), an increase of 1.03%.

I'm about to become a dolphin.. so close. However the question is in terms of decentralization; do we want more whales? Does Hive need a middle class to survive? ;)

I would say it does need more of a middle class.

However my view is that, in the short term, many smaller accounts will be focusing upon the layer 2 tokens to generate some wealth. I think the buy into HP comes after some cash out their H-E tokens that moon.

Guau There are good statistic let us how are the distribution of stake and percent of whales, well dear hope one day be a whale. Hold on.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Well a whale might be out of reach for most of us unless there are some enormous breakthroughs in some HE or gaming tokens.

That could actually net someone enough money to buy a boatload of HIVE.

We will see how things develop over time.

Yea maybe we will be a dolphin and slowly slowly and constantly work it would be.

Just eyeballing, it looks like in the three years up to July 31, 2020, Whales fell by more than half in terms of percentage of the whole of users, Orcas almost doubled, Dolphins were just a couple of points away from tripling, Minnows more than quadrupled, and Red Fish did a 25x.

Going in the right direction, and looking good!

Good to see you picking this up again. Always liked seeing it!

Yeah basically I was wondering why the stats increased so much for the whales, it wasn't so until the gamer whale powered up 2 million hive. I still think the dolphins are doing pretty good. All in all, great to see the stats

I know there are a lot of non-whale accounts who are concentrating on Hive-Engine tokens which makes a lot of sense.

One can amass wealth quicker focusing in that direction as opposed to trying to get situated with Hive. It is easier to stand out in the communities since there is less competition.

From there, people can use the earnings from their HE gains to power up HIVE. It is a quicker way to grow an account in my opinion.

Yeah you're right, hive has too much competition and well Many who have concentrated on the tokens on hive engine has done fairly well. On give you need hundreds of thousands of hive power to make an influence or impact. Sincerely holding Leo is ten times lucrative

LEO is the first breakthrough, but hopefully not the last. We will see what follows behind LEO. There is now a road map as well as a track record.

In the end, I think some of the projects will give people enormous resources, which a portion will find its way into Hive Power.

It only makes sense to "backdoor" it.

Neoxian is starting to do something good too, I think they're collaborating with BRO and incentivizing people holding neoxian as well. More opportunities means people wouldn't need to have all the money to invest. It's getting quite smooth, Leo leads the way, thanks for all your supports as well so far

Yes NEO and a few others are starting to receive some attention. Those in BRO are trying to add some value to the overlooked tokens by creating a use case for them.

We will see how it goes.

No problem, you are one who continually adds value to LEO, so it is good to get the tokens in contributing, strong hands.

Very cool that you are continuing this useful stats on Hive, what do the two bar colors (gray+color) represent?

That massive, I can easily count 2.6 million Hive powered up on that account.

It is nice to see how this massive whale can help us in spreading Hive more.
