Good catch. That sounds pretty likely. And having the original developers on HIVE now would mean we'd better be able to fix such a problem.

Ah. But HIVE development team is responding successfully enough that we can at least have this conversation. Steem team probably still doesn't even know what the problem is.
I personally don't understand how these shared nodes work at all. I'm guessing it's what STINC used to provide, but how could we fork to HIVE and keep their nodes?

We didnt keep their nodes. A number of people on Hive set up their own. It was part of establishing a new blockchain.

It would be a timing thing to have both down, if that is the situation with Steem. I heard they were trying to put another fork in but who knows.
