I am not huge into them. I have some for ARCHON which are now worth a tidy sum.
I will say BROfund goes heavily into miners and did very well with them. From what I understand, you need a lot of them to really get the payout. I had some for PAL and dumped them. It was only a small handful.
I guess over time they provide a decent return but I think there are better ways of going about things unless you are going to be buy a ton of them.

That's the popular opinion but it isn't actually true . You buy 1 LEOM the breakeven is same when compared to 10 LEOM . It most certainly is a long term investment ( 1.5-2 years ) .
But one thing which we should keep in mind is - having large amount of miners is beneficial because of the compounding effect. Although the breakeven is same if we stake the LEO or other tokens mined , we will earn more from curation.

Ah okay. I stand corrected.
I thought that they were a lottery type system on the payouts meaning that larger miner holders had a better chance than ones who had less. Like buying more in a 50/50 raffle.

It is actually like that . You can see brofund getting mining_rewards every single hour and some other small token holders get once in a month ( not exaggerating ) but over long time the probability will play its part and the breakeven is same for everyone irrespective of small or large holdings.
