Elon Musk endorses Donald Trump shortly after ex-president injured by shots fired at rally

Elon Musk posted on X that he “fully” endorses Donald Trump moments after the former president and presumptive Republican nominee was rushed off stage by secret service members following gunshots at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote on X, which he owns.

Trump was taken to a local medical facility, where he is receiving care. His spokesman said the former president “will be fine.” Trump had what appeared to be blood on the side of his head and his ear.

What exactly is an AI agent?

Regardless of how they're defined, the agents are for helping complete tasks in an automated way with as little human interaction as possible.

AI agents are supposed to be the next big thing in AI, but there isn’t an exact definition of what they are. To this point, people can’t agree on what exactly constitutes an AI agent.

At its simplest, an AI agent is best described as AI-fueled software that does a series of jobs for you that a human customer service agent, HR person or IT help desk employee might have done in the past, although it could ultimately involve any task. You ask it to do things, and it does them for you, sometimes crossing multiple systems and going well beyond simply answering questions.

Toys “R” Us is proving artificial intelligence could have a future in film.
The retail toy brand premiered a short promo film at the 2024 Cannes Lions Festival in France this week that was created almost entirely by using OpenAI’s new text-to-video tool.
The company’s entertainment studio partnered with creative agency Native Foreign, which had early access to Sora. Toys “R” Us said it believes it is the first brand to debut a film using the technology. The tool is not yet publicly available.

European regulators have charged Elon Musk’s X with breaching its sweeping Digital Services Act, accusing the platform of misleading its users among other violations.
“Today we issue, for the first time, preliminary findings under the Digital Services Act,” Margrethe Vestager, a senior official at the European Commission, said in a statement Friday. “In our view, X does not comply with the DSA in key transparency areas, by using dark patterns and thus misleading users, by failing to provide an adequate ad repository, and by blocking access to data for researchers.”

We are in the digital era. This means that everything created in the physical realm is going to come under attack.

Here is where we have to start thinking in a completely different way.

Meet the soft robots that can amputate limbs and fuse with other robots

Roboticists at The Faboratory at Yale University have developed a way for soft robots to replicate some of the more unsettling things that animals

Roboticists at The Faboratory at Yale University have developed a way for soft robots to replicate some of the more unsettling things that animals and insects can accomplish — say, a reptile self-amputating a limb, or ants building bridges by temporarily fusing their bodies.

In one demo video, we see a soft quadruped robot crawling along when a falling rock traps a back leg. The reversible joint attaching the leg is heated with current, allowing the robot to break free of its leg and escape. Although it’s not shown in the video, the limb can be re-attached, as well.

India clings to cheap feature phones as brands struggle to tap new smartphone buyers

India is struggling to get new smartphone buyers, as millions of Indians don’t go for an upgrade and continue to be on feature phones.

India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market after China with around 750 million users, is struggling to get new smartphone buyers, as the average person in the country finds it hard to afford a brand-new smartphone.

Instead of switching to a new smartphone, millions of Indian consumers prefer to continue with their existing feature phones or only upgrade to a new feature phone. The latter has resulted in growth in feature phone shipments in the country despite these phones being pretty old-fashioned and having just a handful of features compared to smartphones, which help solve most on-the-go computing requirements for a typical buyer.

If you’re an AT&T customer, your data has likely been stolen

This week, AT&T confirmed it will begin notifying around 110 million AT&T customers about a data breach that allowed cybercriminals to steal the phone records of “nearly all” of its customers. The stolen data contains phone numbers and AT&T records of calls and text messages during a six-month period in 2022, the company says. If you’re an AT&T customer, here’s what the breach could mean for you.

Inside the $43 million Veterans Affairs simulation hospital where doctors are piloting new tech

Health-care workers are testing tech and simulating procedures in a $43 million VA facility called SimVET.

Inside a sprawling $43 million Veterans Affairs facility equipped with operating rooms, intensive care units and an outpatient clinic, there are no patients. At least not any real ones.

The 53,000-square-foot building sits minutes away from the Orlando International Airport in Florida, and it's called the National Center for Simulation Validation, Evaluation and Testing, or SimVET. It serves as the primary hub where teams of front-line health-care workers from the VA travel to practice procedures and pilot new technologies, all without posing unnecessary risks to patients.

Amazon sellers lose coveted buy box ahead of Prime Day after Target discount snafu

Target's discounting event this week wreaked havoc on some third-party merchants, who say they lost sales on Amazon because of the way prices were promoted.

When Brandon Fishman ran a discount on his vitamin-infused coffee for Target's weeklong deals event, he wasn't worried about how it would affect his business on Amazon. He certainly didn't expect his sales there to "fall off a cliff."

Fishman was in for a rude surprise. During Target's sales event this week, Amazon's automated systems detected his bag of VitaCup coffee was available there for $13.43, about $1.50 cheaper than his listing on Amazon.com.

Whistleblowers accuse OpenAI of ‘illegally restrictive’ NDAs

Whistleblowers have accused OpenAI of placing illegal restrictions on how employees can communicate with government regulators, according to a letter obtained by The Washington Post.

Space or nanotechnology? Which excites you more?

absolutely nanotechnology... The potential is immense. I believe nano could be the best for handling cancer cells and other diseases

That is very true. There is that potential. Of course, the thing about investment in space is that it tends to lead to so many other breakthroughs.

Well you're so right on that. Luckily I follow Neil De Grass Tyson so I really understand that. Space exploration has led to breakthroughs in healthcare, communication and lots of different sectors unrelated to space itself. Sadly most of the physics for space is used by Government for Wars. I think both are almost equally important but I honestly would pick nanotechnology because the potential in healthcare is too great to overlook

nanotechnology for me

Seems the popular one.

Have you read any a16z. They have good stuff on their website.

Today’s chatbots, like ChatGPT, are at Level 1. OpenAI claims it is nearing Level 2, defined as a system that can solve basic problems at the level of a person with a PhD. Level 3 refers to AI agents capable of taking actions on a user’s behalf. Level 4 involves AI that can create new innovations. Level 5, the final step to achieving AGI, is AI that can perform the work of entire organizations of people. OpenAI has previously defined AGI as “a highly autonomous system surpassing humans in most economically valuable tasks.”

Thermite that burns at 4,000°F, can melt metal panels, enters Ukraine war
When the grenades are deployed, the thermite mix is converted to molten iron, burning at approximately 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

A new type of weapon is now being used in Ukraine. Thermite, a mix of aluminum and iron oxide, is new kind of munition that’s being attached to drones in Ukraine. Thermite burns fiercely at extremely high temperatures and it’s hot enough to go through metal.

When used, the munition neither creates any explosion nor it results in dense white smoke. It can directly burn right through the metal roof.

In a recent incident, the munition was reportedly used by Ukrainian forces to attack a house used by Russian troops.
