Report: 2023 Chinese Balloon Held US Tech

The Chinese high-altitude balloon that made headlines in 2023 when it crossed across the country for unknown reasons contained technology made by at least five American companies, according to Newsweek.

Former President Joe Biden described the balloon at the time as being "most likely tied to private companies, recreation or research institutions." Beijing claimed that it was a meteorological balloon that was blown off course.

According to Newsweek's sources, a 75-page military analysis, which is based on parts collected from the 2023 balloon and two others, reportedly shows that the balloon contained technology that allowed it to conduct surveys, take photographs, and to collect intelligence data, including a satellite communications module, sensors, and other technology from at least five different U.S.-based companies.

Sources told Newsweek that the balloon may have also contained gliders that could be used for the gathering of more detailed data, but noted that the balloon's storage bays were empty when it was found after being shot down.

Newsweek noted that the analysis, which the publication was not able to directly review, was conducted by a Foreign Materiel Exploitation Squadron at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center in Ohio.

The proposal comes after the Chinese software company in December published an AI model that performed at a competitive level with models developed by American firms like OpenAI, Meta, Alphabet, and others.

DeepSeek purported to develop the model at a fraction of the cost of its American counterparts. A January research paper about DeepSeek's capabilities raised alarm bells and prompted debates among policymakers and leading Silicon Valley financiers and technologists.

The Associated Press previously reported DeepSeek has computer code that could send some user login information to a Chinese state-owned telecommunications company that has been barred from operating in the United States, according to the security research firm Feroot.

Gottheimer cited security concerns as the main reason for introducing the bill.

"It was enough of an alarm that I thought we should immediately ban it on all government devices and make it clear to the public of the risks. I think that's a critical first step," Gottheimer told AP. "Americans should know the impact on their personal privacy and data, especially because we know that Americans are sharing proprietary information on AI chatbots, highly sensitive information, documents, contracts, and the like."

South Korea's spy agency has accused Chinese AI app DeepSeek of "excessively" collecting personal data and using all input data to train itself, and questioned the app's responses to questions relating to issues of national pride.

Caesar, using his classic playbook, decided to build a circumvallation around the army of Pompey. The latter responded by constructing his own fortifications opposite Caesar. By the end of spring Pompey’s army was suffering from lack of fodder and needed to break out. Some Gallic horsemen defected to Pompey, telling him of a hole in Caesar’s line to the south. Pompey attacked there, forcing Caesar to retreat in order to save his remaining troops (6).

Caesar then took Gomphi by siege and then defeated Pompey for the final time at Pharsalus. Pompey escaped to Alexandria but was murdered by Ptolemy.

Homer is the father of poets in the Greco-Roman tradition. We don't know when and if Homer lived, but someone wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey about the Trojan War, and we call him Homer or the so-called Homer. Whatever his real name, he was a great epic poet. Herodotus says Homer lived four centuries earlier than himself. This is not a precise date, but we can date "Homer" to some time following the Greek Dark Age, which was the period after the Trojan War. Homer is described as a blind bard or rhapsode. Ever since, his epic poems have been read and used for various purposes, including teaching about the gods, morality, and great literature. To be educated, a Greek (or Roman) had to know his Homer.

Now Musk is vowing to deploy truly driverless taxis, a move legal experts say would place crash liability squarely on Tesla. Musk has promised fully self-driving Teslas for about a decade and failed to deliver. The promises have grown more frequent, with more immediate timelines, in recent months as Musk has shifted Tesla's focus toward autonomous vehicles and away from mass-market EV sales.

Yet Musk's elusive comments continue to keep investors guessing about when — and at what scale, with what business model — Tesla will finally deploy fully self-driving technology that, to date, it has never displayed on public roads.

Tesla and Musk did not respond to requests for comment.

Roman Emperor Justinian I or Justinian the Great (Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustinianus) (482/483–565 CE) is known for his reorganization of the government of the Roman Empire and his codification of the laws, the Codex Justinianus, in 534 CE. Some call Justinian "the last Roman," which is why this Byzantine emperor makes it to this list of important ancient people that otherwise ends in 476 CE. Under Justinian, the Hagia Sophia Church was built and a plague devastated the Byzantine Empire.

Earlier Saturday, heavy snow fell in sections of northern and central Wisconsin, with the community of Medford reporting 13 inches (33 cm) on Saturday. Some places in northern Michigan got more than a half a foot on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The next storm is also expected to move quickly, Oravec said. It is forecast to form across the plains on Tuesday and push eastward, bringing a swath of snow to areas south of the states hit this weekend.

“We expect the potential for heavy snow all the way from areas of Kansas, eastward into the upper Ohio Valley, central Appalachians and into the mid-Atlantic," he said.

Ovid (43 BCE–17 CE) was a prolific Roman poet whose writing influenced Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dante, and Milton. As those men knew, to understand the corpus of Greco-Roman mythology requires familiarity with Ovid's Metamorphoses.

Pope Francis earlier Tuesday, in a letter to U.S. bishops, aimed at Vice President J.D. Vance's use of church doctrine to defend deportation and warned that removal of people purely over their illegal status "will end badly."

He also said that the mass deportations by force "damages the dignity of many men and women, and of entire families, and places them in a state of particular vulnerability and defenselessness"

Homan told Newsmax that he's a lifelong Catholic, but said that the pope "doesn't understand" what the United States is facing with the immigration situation.

"He's got a border wall around the Vatican," said Homan. "That's okay. But we can't have a border. We can't have a wall around the United States."

He added that under Trump, illegal immigration border crossings are down 90%, adding that the pope should pay attention to the news that border crossings are at a record low.

"And that's what the pope ought to be paying attention to if he wants to get in our business," Homan said. "We're saving lives every day. A secure border saves lives. When less fentanyl comes across that border, less Americans die from drug overdoses."

Homan also repeated his stance to reporters at the White House Tuesday, reports CNN.

Bessent to Visit Ukraine for Talks on Rare Earth Minerals

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will travel to Ukraine this week to discuss a potential deal concerning rare earth minerals, according to a source familiar with his plans.

Bessent will be the first cabinet-level official in U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to visit Ukraine.

Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Trump have expressed interest in a pact that would give the United States access to Ukraine's rare earth resources in exchange for continued support in fending off the Russian invasion.

The source, who requested anonymity as the plans were still confidential, did not offer additional details on the itinerary. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a Feb. 7 memo viewed by the Journal, Noem asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to provide agents to help probe the financial movements of human-trafficking networks and companies that employ people who are in the country illegally. Those agents would be authorized to help arrest and transport detainees.

According to the Journal, Noem's request is part of a broader effort by the Republican administration to deputize law-enforcement officials at a number of federal agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the U.S. Marshals Service.

We have been discussing the development of Stoicism as the leading Hellenistic philosophy so that we might look at its relationship to Christianity -- the theory being that Christianity has some Stoic ideas in it.

Think of the way early Christian leaders (circa 100 A.D. and beyond) viewed their situation. They believed in Jesus as the Messiah, based on the Gospels and the teaching of Paul, but those beliefs were missing a substantive philosophical framework, or more correctly a theology, that could be taught and defended. The only way to overcome this lack of structure was to create it.

Scipio Africanus or Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Major won the Hannibalic War or Second Punic War for Rome by defeating Hannibal at Zama in 202 BCE. Scipio, who came from an ancient Roman patrician family, the Cornelii, was the father of Cornelia, the famous mother of the social reforming Gracchi. He came into conflict with Cato the Elder and was accused of corruption. Later, Scipio Africanus became a figure in the fictional "Dream of Scipio". In this surviving section of De re publica, by Cicero, the dead Punic War general tells his adoptive grandson, Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus (185–129 BCE), about the future of Rome and the constellations. Scipio Africanus' explanation worked its way into medieval cosmology.

FCC's Carr to Probe Comcast's 'Invidious' Discrimination

Federal Communications Chair Brendan Carr is seeking to open an investigation into Comcast and NBCUniversal's diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and whether they violate equal employment opportunity laws,

"I am writing to inform you that I have asked the FCC's Enforcement Bureau to open an
investigation into Comcast and NBCUniversal," Carr's letter read, as reviewed by Newsmax. "In particular, I want to ensure that your companies are not promoting invidious forms of discrimination in violation of FCC regulations and civil rights laws."

Iran's Khamenei Mocks Trump Over Gulf of America

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei mocked President Donald Trump on Tuesday over his renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to become the Gulf of America, Newsweek reported.

"USA has set out to change on paper the map of the world! Of course, only on paper. In the real world, it lacks all reality," Khamenei posted on X in Spanish and other languages. The accompanying image used the words "Golfo de México," or Gulf of Mexico in Spanish.

As years go by, more Americans say they have no opinion of Clinton (12%) and Bush (14%), who left office in 2001 and 2009, respectively.

Disney's 2024 annual report, published in September, removed mentions of its "Reimagine Tomorrow" program, an online space for "amplifying underrepresented voices" that featured some of Disney's diversity, equality and inclusion commitments and actions.

The memo notes Disney has added a new factor called "talent strategy" to evaluate executive compensation, weighing how well leaders advance Disney's values of cultivating an environment in which all employees can thrive.

Chronology and Theology of Stoicism
In the previous post we briefly discussed Stoic philosophy and hinted at a kinship with Christian philosophy. Now we will describe Stoicism in more detail and explain its standing in Eastern Europe and Asia during the time of Jesus.

The above chronology provides a snapshot of Stoic history. Of course the word Stoic comes from the meeting place of Zeno and his followers – the Stoa (covered porch) in the center of Athens. But Zeno was not from Athens. He was born in Citium, a town in southwest Cyprus. Immersed in philosophy from a young age, Zeno migrated to Athens in 311 B.C. at the age of 22. There he studied with the Cynic Crates, Polemo, head of the Academy, and the Megaric philosopher Stilpo. Finally rejecting Platonic metaphysics, Zeno launched his own school around 300 B.C.

The second of the five men in the late first to second century CE who are now known as the "good emperors," Trajan was named optimus 'best' by the Senate. He extended the Roman Empire to its furthest extent. Hadrian of Hadrian's Wall fame succeeded him to the imperial purple.

Now that President Donald Trump is back in America’s driving seat, his plan to slash spending, particularly to foreign countries, is moving ahead practically unencumbered. The United States Agency for International Development aka USAID now sits squarely in the crosshairs of MAGA, with questions like; “Where is our money going?”, “How does this help America?” and “Why weren’t we told about this?” being shouted rather than whispered. Conversely, there are those who wholly support USAID and say the influence it affords the US is invaluable.

Piers Morgan dives deeply into this issue, joined by Harvard mathematician and physicist Dr Eric Weinstein. former USAID head and national security adviser to Donald Trump, Ambassador John Bolton, commentator and Babylon Bee contributor Ashley St Clair and Sunday Times columnist Matthew Syed.

Publius Vergilius Maro (70–19 BCE), aka Vergil or Virgil, wrote an epic masterpiece, the Aeneid, for the glory of Rome and especially Augustus. He also wrote poems called Bucolics and Eclogues, but he is chiefly known now for his story of the Trojan prince Aeneas' adventures and the founding of Rome, which is patterned on the Odyssey and Iliad.

Not only was Vergil's writing continuously read throughout the Middle Ages, but even today he exerts an influence on poets and the college-bound because Vergil is on the Latin AP exam.

We’ve had quite a debate going in the comments section of my last post. The sparing back and forth about Greek influence on the early Christian church has evoked strong emotions on both sides. I feel like I’m sitting at the net in a tennis match.

Seriously, though, the link between Christianity and Greek philosophy is a subject we should investigate. The Hellenistic period itself is interesting, although enigmatic at the same time. Named by Professor D.S. Droysan, a German academic of the nineteenth century, Hellenistic refers to the time span from 322 B.C.to 30 B.C in Eastern Europe and Western Asia when Greek culture became widespread after the death of Alexander. Using one word to characterize the period is risky because the period was not uniform, but the term is now universal so we have to use it.
