Could Hive Encrypted Memos Replace Email?

in LeoFinance12 days ago

Encrypted email service, Protonmail, which I, among many other people use as what people are lead to believe is a safe option for sending and receiving encrypted email, is in the news this week after reportedly have assisted authorities with accessing user emails on request. This is a violation of what the user is led to believe, that their data is encrypted and safe. This is simply not true with any company, especially Web2 companies.

Hive Fixes This

The Hive blockchain fixes this issue entirely. Hive has a function built into the core of the blockchain that allows anyone to send any Hive user a message for the small price of 0.001 HIVE or HBD! This happens using a transaction and the memo section for your message. If you don't care about the message being public, then send it as a normal memo, but if you only want the receiver to be able to read the message, send it as an encrypted memo and nobody can read it but them!

The small amount of token you pay to send this message doesn't touch the value of being able to send truly encrypted Web3 emails without the fear of governments trying to pry into your data. Hive is a decentralized network ran by witnesses and nodes all over the world and can't be tapped by the bad acting governments like a centralized company such as Protonmail can.

The Hive Memo Key

When you create your Hive account, it comes with a list of different keys. This can be quite confusing for new users, but there are reasons you have these different keys. They all have different functions for your account. The memo key is the key that you need to make sure you have logged into Hive Keychain, or whatever signing service you are using to be able to read your encrypted memos.

How To Send An Encrypted Memo

When you send an encrypted memo, you always start with a hashtag then a space (# message) before your message. So it should look something like this if you are using the Peakd wallet. It works the same on any Hive wallet. Peakd happens to be the best wallet to view your encrypted transactions currently, that is why I am using it as the example.

Once you send the transaction. The sender and receiver will see something like this...

All you then have to do is click the lock icon and then sign the transaction to view your message.

Once you sign the message, you will then be able to view the message.

If someone were to go into the Hive block explorer trying to lurk around and be all sneaky and invade your privacy, then this is all they would see...

Just a bunch of numbers and letters that don't mean anything! So yes, when it comes to the possibility of Hive fixing the issue of private email, it is true!

Let's Change Email Forever

We need to be shouting this from the roof tops as one of the best use cases for Hive as a blockchain! This could bring people into our ecosystem just looking for a way to keep their conversations to themselves. I also know that Peakd and other services like Ecency are working on chat features as well that would give a private chat experience. These are things that in the world of censorship and data harvesting by the corporate and government vampires, we need more than anything! And we have it solved here on Hive!

I’ve come across the memo field where transferring Hive to an exchange in order to trade. I hadn’t thought of it being used this way but now that makes sense

People should be jumping all over this.

Yeah, I learned about it early on. It's just so under used it's not even funny.

I believe it's very possible for Hive to build just about any feature which would replace other platforms, Decentralization is the future 🔥

Not really. Hive is limited in it's abilities. Second layers can do a lot, but it's not the end all be all chain. This just happens to be a feature that does work.

oh wow I really believed Web3 had it all... Well I have quite a lot to learn thanks friend for the insights 🥰

Indeed that is a totally underrated, awesome feature of the Hive chain! Great post! I will add it to the collection of tutorials I am preparing currently!

Awesome, glad I could help educate!

It is a feature that ought to be better known. I may not even notice when I get a memo as there's no notification for it. It should be ready to use if people have their keys set up. It does mean that anyone can see who is communicating even if they can't read the messages.

I played with PGP/GPG encryption years ago, but very few people were using it and it is complex to set up. We need secure communications and Hive offers a solution.

Yeah, I wish there was a way to hide it completely, but hey, I'll take what I can get. Now if we can just make the transactions and wallets private like Monero, I would be extremely happy, lol.

That would mean major changes and would break some dapps, but maybe it could be added eventually.

Yeah, it'll never happen. I am at least happy with the encrypted memos option. That is a form of privacy. Now we need some Monero to Hive bridges. That would be cool.

Very interesting option!
I didn't know about the "# ..." command for encrypting a memo! :)
Thanks!

The tech is needed, but my concern is character limits. IDK if there are any.

Could be a simple code change, I would think...

E-Mail-- or should that be "Hive-Mail"?-- would be a game-changer for us here. Without using the memo key, using the memo field of a Send TX can be used as Poor Man's E-Mail; it would also be limited (for obvious reasons).

An e-mail system using encrypted memos would put Hive light-years ahead of competitorswhy this hasn't been done yet is a mystery to me.
