Do monkeys dislike Garlic ?

#threads #poll #polls #hivegardening
repelling pests and monkeys with garlic : In this thread cast I speak of an experiment I did to keep monkeys at bay. specially from the garden
This worked for me
1/🧵

Sort:

garlic as a repellant that sounds interesting

yes that is one use case too

2/🧵
It was almost an accident that I discovered that monkeys dislike garlic
I found this when monkeys that had invaded a residential area did not eat a pizza that had a lot of garlic (part of seasoning )

3/🧵
Take bulbs of garlic and blend with water in a blender . Store entire content in a bottle the flavor comes out stronger over time though it can be used immediately.
I used it on surfaces and place where monkeys come frequently

The only question is how frequently I need to spray it. I mean 3/4 days or so. Will that be okay?

And also how long does the garlic smell last which will repel, the monkeys?

It depends on how strong a solution you make and the surface it is being sprayed on. How big an area do you want to cover.
by my experience I did a couple of times a day initially
1

The area is around 40X30 ft. There is also a boundary wall where they used to sit.

We also have mango trees, they are eating all d mangoes. As d mango trees r big, may not be feasible to spray all over; any idea to get rid of this problem?

5> I have seen people use fire crackers or the sound to scare them

We have tried this. But this is a temporary solution, They give up the area for a few hours or a day. The next day they will come again.

Oh that would be a challenge to spray the trees though the boundary walls maybe
So another technique which some people use is to have a baboon. They would call a guy with a baboon .
1>

2> He would tie it at places where the monkeys used 2 come and they would give up the territory and move away. Some residential areas adopt this practice collectively. This works but not sure how viable it is for you to implement

3> Some science students used the idea to make a mannequin baboon with pre recorded sound to scare away monkeys from their college
I am not sure how effective that was

4>
But it is known that monkeys leave the area if there is a baboon in the vicinity
Another thing worth exploring is the ultrasonic sounds to repel monkeys. it can be tried for sure

If u r ok experimenting with sounds check this

read the comments first and stay at a safe distance. there are many sound sources available

also check this

This is just for a general idea not asking u to buy
May be if we can get the sound it can be played from an old mobile or music player with speakers attached

See, I have gone through many Youtube videos, which also include the ultrasound technique... Monkeys can hear even 50kHz sound.

But for me, it has to be affordable and cost-effective in the first place.

2
using an electrical pump drenching the spray covered the place like rain drops. did this several times a day and slowly the monkeys gave up the space.
then I reduced the frequency.

3
It all depends upon a how big the are u wanna clear, how strong is the garlic is and who is more determined u or the monkeys

Ha ha...who is more determined? Of course monkeys, we literally give up to their invasion. They are so clever creatures that they patiently wait for the right time to invade. It is impractical to stand in the garden for 10 hrs to protect it

And it is also about what economic cost does it take. It should be affordable for us as well.

We grow vegetables to consume organic things, as such seasonal vegetables in the market are quite cheap in my locality. can you imagine the Onion price is just 10 cents per kilo? Ladies' fingers are just 30 cents per kilo.

We have grown cucumber, watermelon, Ladies finger, and in fruits, bananas, Mangoes, and berries.

But due to monkeys our passion to grow veggies is diminishing. Mangoes are almost eaten by them in this season.

start to reclaim small areas cover them with net or old sheets and spray that with garlic see if it deters them. Slowly you should be able to reclaim the entire area though the mango trees are going to be a challenge 1 step at a time we go

We have nets, but they are quite intelligent, they somehow manage to sneak in through it. And another problem is that these days a few birds got entangled with the nets, and we had to rescue them this season.

Garlic costs around 1.3 USD per KG here. What is d estimated garlic quantity I need to make this garlic solution for an area of 30x40 ft? Any tentative estimate?

Also,do u have a video, I just wanna see d process of applying this solution

5> I had no clue people were experimenting with garlic this lady used it again for insects using the blender technique and added mint too

She ended up cooking it This Makes sense too
#gosh

Thank you for sharing this video, I will definitely watch it thoroughly, I will also estimate the cost, then will begin the experiment.

u can also grow your own garlic from store bought garlic and maybe if garlic paste is available in store and close to expiry they give discounts.
Even expired one works 4 us as we are only spraying it and not consuming

the growing part is lengthy time consuming process but if those plants are in the vicinity are they repelling the monkeys ? something to be investigated

wow never knew about this method

so many things in the kitchen r super useful

1>
The question is how are you going to spray do you have some kind of electrical device with a hose or one of those small bottles we use to spray the plants?

We have a small pump set to spray water, should I make a perforated nozzle and fit it with the spray hose with this garlic solution? Will it work?

should work let the solution sit over night for max results and strain so that there are no solid particles to clog the nozzle.
also cooking to get the maximum garlic out is also a good idea which you can try

some places also sell that ready to use garlic paste if u do not get the garlic that can be tried too though not sure if it has any chemical or preservatives

The idea is to reclaim your territory by introducing smells, sounds or anything else that makes them a bit uncomfortable and nudges them to leave.
So going forward it is finding the thing which works 4 u via trial and error

2>
Start by taking photographs or identifying spots where they sit and r there some entry exit points to locate the spot Though I did not make any videos at that time

3>
I found a similar video of this guy and he used it for pests and not monkeys and he even boiled the garlic maybe it increased the aroma in the water

4> Whatever the method idea is to get the max aroma into the liquid
For spraying I used my vaccum cleaner blower which has a spray bottle to be connected to the blower side

Good idea, but I don't have any such device. But I would try.

did not know about this at all

glad you know it now :)

4
Also hopefully the monkeys at your place are not garlic loving . These days I am surprised by so many animals love all these spices and seasoning we use luckily for the the garlic worked quite well.

5
Also try to protects any plants etc with old wasted sheets and spray it with the liquid to prolong the effect.
The water evaporates but the smell remains
How big an are are u planning to cover ?

  1. This can be done step by step if we get this working we can think of automating the spray part

I just know banana is their favorite

they tend to come after almost all kinds of fruit and can ruin the fruits growing on trees too if they invade the fields or residential areas

These day they come for all kinds of food

4/🧵
Though the water evaporates but the smell of garlic remains and that is something that monkeys do not like
Do these sprays periodically to make the smell stronger and stronger

5/🧵
Garlic is 100% organic and can be sprayed on plants as well.
It repels a lot of pests too.

6/🧵
One twist to the trick I had old curtains which I put on plants and then sprayed the garlic spray on them lavishly
The monkeys left the plants alone without disturbing them

7/🧵
The tip to not strain the mix ensures the smell of garlic becomes stronger as it sits in the bottle.
It can be strained before use so that it does not clog the nozzle

8/🧵
If anyone wonders why drive away monkeys so a note : there are not monkeys in the wild or at a zoo but the ones which invade household

9/🧵
I have successfully used it to drive away mosquitoes, too without use of chemicals

10/🧵
pro tip use enough garlic to make the smell strong
b) let it rest a while for it to get stronger and it is ok to store the solution for a few days

11/🧵
The way to deal with monkeys is if you track the part of the day when they invade your space then use the spray just before that time for max effect.

12/🧵
You can also use an automatic sprinkler or a timer circuit to do this automatically. My idea is not to harm any other living creature but to protect oneself, our family plants and belongings

1/ Exactly, what a kind-hearted person you are. I like it. They are not our enemies, but we just want to make sure our produce doesn't get invaded or damaged by the monkeys.

Ah just trying to co exist with all other living things trying not to harm them on purpose

Exactly. They all are part of this ecosystem, and they have every right to co-exist. Humankind best testifies when we extend the privileges of kindness to all living beings around us

It's an honor to find a person like you here. Thank you.

You come across as a kind caring soul too
Take care and stay blessed

2/ Some people even shoot monkeys, which is really bad, even monkeys are also very very emotional about their lineage. I have seen that.

You are right that we should not harm them and this is something I like a lot about your experiment.,

Thanks so glad we thing alike on this topic :)

I thought that was for vampires LOL But seriously, interesting discovery, I had no idea!

luckily no experience with them
Hope it remains this way ;)

I will definitely try it. But don't you think it will be a costly affair?

But at the same time, I am skeptical to be convinced that it will effectively work. But I will definitely try at least once and will let u know about the result.

You have to weigh the cost by the damages done by pest, I guess

Sir, just a question-- Are you a vegan?

yes Sir I am mostly but I eat cheese and dairy products too
No meats for me

That sounds great. Glad to find you here.

pleasure meeting you too

I am not sure whether like garlic or not but this is an interesting topic to do some research. I think no but not sure.

I discovered when they came for food but moved away from a slices of pizza that had a seasoning that had the smell of garlic

Wow I didn't know this damn

yeah we all keep learning by trial & error and experience :)

Oh wow never thought of garlic in this light

I don't really know much about monkeys. They're not common here in my city. We can only see them on traveller's vehicles. So, I have no idea. Let me check the #thread
