@taskmaster4450le how do trading windows work on the MLB? Can the Mets still acquire new talent for this season and perhaps dump some dead weight if there's any?
@taskmaster4450le how do trading windows work on the MLB? Can the Mets still acquire new talent for this season and perhaps dump some dead weight if there's any?
Yes the trade deadline is July 31st. Teams can make trades until then to improve their teams. They can also call up players from the minors at any time or claim guys who were released.
Cool so still 2-ish months. Do you think the Mets should try to get new talent or they better off build up for the next season?
A hard call right now. There are some who should be let go to bring up a young guy or two.
But they are in no mans land now. We will see how the next few weeks are.
Draft picks are distributed to the worst-ranked teams like in the NFL or do they have a different system for that as well?
Yes for american kids. The draft is worst to first although not as imporant in baseball since the kids are so far away from the majors. Outside the top 10, there is usually little consensus.
Ah that's true. I forgot it takes some time before they actually get to the majors after they are drafted
Yeah they are young when drafted.
That is why it is so hard. Hard to tell what a high school kid will turn into.
The international kids are free agents but each team has a pool of bonus money they can spend. It is a total and they are free to allocate it as they wish. Exceed that and you can lose draft picks.
Trade deadline sees buyers and sellers. If the #mets fall too far out of it, they might be sellers, trading major league talent for prospects and guys who might help in the future.
I see. And I imagine teams have a salary cap just like on other leagues major American leagues. Is that correct?
There is no salary cap. There is a luxury tax threshold. If a team exceeds it, they pay a penalty that is redistuributed to the smaller market teams. So they can go over but it can get expensive.
And the Mets are way over right now.
Oh that's an interesting model. Quite different than what the other leagues have in place. MLB is really unique in a lot of ways
The MLB players union is the most powerful in US sports. So they fought a salary cap and never let one instilled.
