I am not an expert either @vimukthi but I do know it adds to the pile. Search engines love dynamic sites and comments are constantly changing things. As the same time, the total "size" of the site gets bigger because each comment is its own page.
So I would say they help in many ways. As for the exact SEO, that I cannot answer.
