Changing your Money Story -Part 2 - The Richest Man in Babylon

This write up kind of follows Changing your money story by replacing if then by wouldn't it be nice. You might want to read that too, if you haven't already done so.

Days ago, seemingly out of nowhere, I received a message from an artist named @brunonacif

I bought two pieces of digital art of his, months ago on NFT Showroom, and must admit that I like his style. Apparently, I had sent a message to him along the lines of:

If I were rich, I would buy a lot more of your art.

Let's say that I have been a struggling creative ( as well as a supporter of fellow creatives ) for many years - probably even decades - and this has had quite an impact on my money story.

I am only now coming to grasps with all of this ( at the mid-life crisis age of 39 ) and the blockchain, Hive and Leofinance play an important part in turning all of this around.

Part of the work that I'm putting in to change my money story for the better, to get rid of old believes that aren't serving me and replace them by new, healthier and more helpful believes, is listening to audio books on finance and money.

I have to admit that - being a storyteller and having been a writer since I can hold a pen - a lot of finance content that I read or listen to doesn't stick. It's too dry, there's too many numbers, too much jargon, too little story. It goes one ear in and out of the other. It's often too much of the same.

Nevertheless, every now and then, there's this book or podcast that is like a drop of water in a desert, a breath of fresh air.

To get back to @brunonacif 's message, I read the following words in the newly added BeeChat feature on Peakd, some days back:

Make it your purpose to be rich and you will achieve it

He also recommended me a book, that lead me to writing this post, titled:

"The Richest Book in Babylon"

So, in the last three days, I listened to the entire book ( about 5 hours ) and I must say I love it.

It already seems to be shifting some gears, changing the wiring of my brain.

As is often the case, when I'm in the right mindset, I start to see more and more parallels between my life and the information that I receive. It's as if the pieces of the puzzle - that seemed to be unsolvable up till recently - start to get together, slowly but steadily. The vision is getting clearer and finishing it, reaching a previously impossible goal, suddenly seems totally possible.

I wanted to make this a short post so I'll end it here by saying that the lessons in this book might not be entirely new to you but, if you like stories and if listening to an audio book suits you, I highly recommend this title.

In fact, I plan to give it another listen very soon and will start practicing the lessons that I learnt from it, starting now.

If you're into ( digital ) art and want to support ( more or less struggling ) creatives, here's:

Brunonacif's art on NFT Showroom
My art on NFT Showroom

And, in case you like this kind of content, here's an older post of mine
on another awesome book on finances:

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

I'm looking forward to book recommendations on finance from you guys / girls. Preferably with somewhat lesser know titles with actual storytelling. Feel free to share them with me in a comment. Cheers!

The picture above this post is a screenshot of my little chat with Brunonacif. I hope he doesn't mind me sharing it.

Sort:

Might see if J has/read that one yet, he's been reading more finance books lately.

Nothing wrong with hearing things you already know, it might help you realise that you know it (which has happened to me a fair bit with 3d stuff XD) or at least let you know that you're on the right track ;D

I'm back Vince. Glad to see you are still here.

Nice to hear that you're back :<)

I never left for any longer than a week or so even though I often feel that I could use a serious break. It's part of my world life...

I'm curious if he has :<)

Yeah. sometimes we need to have something repeated / fed to us ( in a form that fits us ) before it clicks.

He says he hasn't read that. Curiousity might be slightly piqued though especially as he says he hasn't been reading that many finance books and I'm like but I saw some on your bedside table o_O and now he's trying to remember what he has on the bedside table XD

hahaha! nice anecdote. Hope he will give it a listen :<)

Sounds interesting and something I would like to read.

It was 15 odd years ago and I was in my mid-40's when I felt something was wrong with the life I was living. While I made some small changes it wasn't until my mid-50's that I made the real drastic changes that needed to be made. I shed a lifetime of cultural conditioning to find a better way. While I am still putting together what that better way is, I am probably happier than I have been in a long time. I am also thinking that crypto may be part of the solution. :)

Thank you for sharing your personal story here. If that was indeed your midlife crisis you will make it to a sweet old age eventually ;<)

It sure seems like you're on the right track.

One of my favorite words of wisdom are:

"Change is the only constant in life"

It's funny though how many try to resist it, thereby making life more difficult.

"Change is the only constant in life"

Words to live by. :)

It's funny though how many try to resist it, thereby making life more difficult.

My country seems to have a lot of these people. They yearn for "good ole days" that were never really that great. They want to keep a status quo that causes us all to fall further behind and as you say "make life more difficult" if not unbearable.

I made a book review of that when I was new at Leo. It talked about a lot of stuff I've been doing already but there's an added impact to something retelling you the wisdom you already know. Like it enforcers the lesson in a good way. Robert Kiyosaki's books preaches these lessons and it's not unlikely that he got the ideas from this book as well. This should be taught during grade school and maybe a lot of lives would have been saved from the rat race.

Çool to hear you did. I sure believe Kiyosaki got his lessons from there, as well as from several other books. To use a film example ( having studied that ), Tarantino knows his movie classic better than most and borrows from loads of other movies, still he managed to develop his own, unique style.

I can't help but feel that there's a reason we don't learn these things in school.

I have a list on my website of 10 biz/finance books to read: https://scaredycatguide.com/10-business-and-real-estate-books-to-read

I put it as a post a few weeks back I believe.

Good to know. Checked it out and I think I've read about half of it. Cheers for the info :<)

I've got this book on my playlist now. Let's hope it can turn my life around. I don't want to be rich, just comfortable enough while keeping me keen.

Hope it helps you in any way. I feel it's already helping me. To be more precise, it's one of many steps in the right direction, part of my path towards greater abundance.

Have a good one!

I've listened to the first part and it was not what I expected with the narrative but I am already putting it into practice. '1/10 of what I earn is for me'.
