[WE-144] - My Passion - Hiking

The Peak District, England, UK

In this week's weekend engagement questions, I picked to talk about my passion for hiking. In fact, its more than just hiking. I like to take youth hiking who haven't had the chance to experience the pleasure of nature and hiking because of living in suburban London.

Why hiking?

A few years ago, I was living in Sudan where it is on the edge of the Sahara dessert. It's incredibly hot and dusty. The climate is really harsh and the people are poor. They don't have the chance to really appreciate the beauty of nature. They are surviving day to day.

When I returned to the UK, I thought how lucky everyone is that they have such beautiful countryside yet so many have never really been there. I therefore joined a youth group as an adult volunteer and starting taking young people out hiking and camping in the British countryside.

Some of the young people in London haven't ever been to the countryside. They didn't know there was so much out there to see. They are often amazed by the views and the expanse of the countryside.

An added bonus

Not only was I enjoying the great countryside but I also found that hiking was a great way to escape the stress of my work life. I have one of those stressful jobs where I need to make decisions that have big ramifications. Sometimes I get it wrong and it can be very expensive and hard to deal with.

I found if I stay at home, its difficult to switch off. There are always emails on my phone and people pinging messages for help.

When I am out hiking or camping with my youth group, it's a different type of busy that takes you away from the work. I can unwind.

Not just UK

I have also ventured beyond the UK with some lovely hikes abroad. The most notable was taking my youth group to Switzerland.

Taking young people overseas for these types of trips is something that takes months of planning. There are a lot of forms, risks assessments and training that needs to be completed first. However, it is an experience that the young people will remember for their whole lives as some of the nature and the views in some of the places that we go to our simply breath taking!

Conclusion

I love hiking as it is invigorating, it takes the stress away and we see some of the most awesome places in the world. I hope that I can go to other parts of the world in future. However, there is plenty to see in the UK and I encourage everyone to get out and try it for themselves.

Covid days were also tough as we couldn't get out - so make the most of things while you can. Don't put things off!

I grew up in the countryside and we didn't liked it then because we fantasized more of the city places, but when we were out of the rural area, we began to miss the natural blessings in the rural area.

Back then, we enjoyed bush tour

I think that is human nature. We end up perhaps taking for granted what we have. I do that now living in London that I don't really make the most of living in a city that so many people would love to live in. I usually only get out and make use of what London has to offer when people come to visit.

It is probably the same for those living in the countryside. They don't always appreciate what they have.

Thanks for dropping by.

Well done @awah Great post about your passion of Hiking. Great way to connect with nature and if coupled with good company; it's the best form of life. Am not sure if am allowed to tip (not sure if setup correctly or not, but am gonna try) !pizza !wine

Aha, now I know about the 3 rule day as well. I will try wine on a newer post 😁

That's awesome, that you take them out!
It's amazing how many people don't know these things or where food and such comes from.
Great read, thanks!

Thank you @anna-newkey - yes, some of are so surprised when they see a cow or sheep in a field and will be like "can we pass that on the footpath". So it takes a bit of training to get them to the experience level where they can walk and camp in the hills. But its all good for them to learn these things. It gives them courage and gives them a sense of achievement.

Shocking really, so detached from the real world.
It's lovely you're taking this on and that it helps you relieving some stress at the same time.. That's brilliant! 👍

Some of them don't have the money for venturing out of the city or parents that have any experience to go out into the countryside themselves. So its about giving the opportunity for young people to do things away from what they would normally do.

It can be a great way to break the inner-city routine and get them to talk about what is going on in their lives. You get to know someone quite well when away camping with them.

Wow, do you do this as part of an organisation? Or on own?
I mean, how to you find the children who need that little bit of guidance?
I'm totally amazed, that is so kind of you!

As part of an organisation. We ensure all adults are properly trained etc. Its a lot of fun.

Yay! 🤗

Wow, there are really nice places to go hiking. Here that would mean going out of town as it's pretty crowded in the city. It's cool that you get to enjoy your passion. Hope you enjoy hiking more and do share more of it when you can. Have a fantastic week ahead!

Thanks @tydynrain - its definitely really rewarding and helps the young people too. Sometimes it gives me a chance to coach them in their life problems too and hopefully just the small things I can do, can help make a positive difference in their lives.
