This weekend has been a good one. My brother-in-law drove up from Virginia to spend the day and night with us. I love this guy as he would take the shirt of his back in a snow storm for a person. He is always a big help when we need him.
To show our love for him, we bought some flank steaks and a fillet of something that I don't remember the name. They were packaged in the marinate already, so didn't have to fool around with much prep. I smoked them for over two hours and they were exceptionally tasty.
All in all it was a good time with good company and conversation. Although we don't see eye to eye on some things, we are able to have respectful conversations and agree to disagree on things such as politics and religion.
Respectful conversation is not something I see much anymore. It seems people get so triggered at the littlest perceived slight to their beliefs.
Anyway, after he left this morning, we decided that it was a good day to just relax and enjoy the NFL games for the day. While watching, I worked on the computer doing some research and going down the rabbit hole of the interwebs.
On a more somber note, we also got word today that a fella from the Vet group I work with passed away this morning. He had been fighting pancreatic cancer for a while now. Thankfully they were able to keep him comfortable through his illness and he passed peacefully.
It made me all the more thankful for the time with family and friends. Speaking of which, I touched base with a few guys I served with in the Marines. I hadn't spoken to them for years, but it was like we were back in those days of our youth again. We joked and caught each other up on our lives and that of others.
Since those conversations I have been thinking a great deal about visiting a couple of them in the near future. A couple of them only live 4 hours away. If I was able to drive, I would just pick up and go see them, but I am dependant on others to chaffeur me around. The wife and I may take a trip later this fall though and will look to see if we can meetup somewhere. I hope we can and look forward to it.
Other than my friend from the veterans group passing away, it was a good weekend and I look forward to the week ahead.
I hope your weekend was a fine one and all of you have a great week ahead. In the meatime, hold onto your loved ones, family and friends. Life is short and we can't have yesterday back.
Thanks for reading,
Joe

There's nothing like the passing of someone you knew to remember to live life better, hey? If it wasn't for death, life wouldn't be as precious. We do get caught up in things, fogetting that fact, sometimes!
Oh man. We go 4x4'ing with some friends and there's a few that have really, really full on political viewpoints and many that I find offensively sexist/misogynistic. It is SO hard to keep my mouth shut! Others I find have different views, but just don't talk about them - for example, one is absolutely against religion, and the other is a full on Christian. Still, they manage to share a beer round the campfire every year and have a laugh. The 'agreeing to disagree' can often look like 'just shut up!' and eeryone gets along just fine, having far more in common!
Yes, when someone we know passes it brings the reality of our own mortality to the forefront of our minds.
That is a new way for me to look at it. Yes, it does make life that much more precious when you think about it.
Sadly the "agree to disagree" has been lost right now in our society it seems. But I try my best to not get worked up about things and look to what we have in common when talking with friends and family.
Thanks for such a thoughtful comment @riverflows. It is much appreciated to have a good convo.
Sounds like a nice weekend. Sorry to hear about the vet who succumbed to pancreatic cancer, that is one of the worst ones to get. At least he was comfortable on his way out.
How are doing?
Im doing okay. Been busy offline with house maintenance and starting up a consulting business. How have you been?
For me flank steaks are the best for a barbecue!!! Good choice
They were fantastic. I was so glad I didn't overcook them. They were really tender and juicy.
I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I know how much that can suck. I've lost a couple acquaintances in the past year. It sounds like you had a really good time with your family.
Thank you and I too am sorry for the loss of your friends as well.
Yes, it was a wonderful visit with family.
Glad you got to spend time with your brother! He sounds like a great brother to have. Sorry to hear about your vet brother passing, but at least he is in no more pain. Our weekend here has been relaxing and uneventful. Hope you have a great week as well!
Relaxing is good. That is what the weekends are for right?
Yes Sir, it is!
I’m glad that you got to spend time with good company and eat some delicious food. That is a recipe for a good weekend. It’s also really important that you can agree to disagree on things and be civil about it. There is so much wrong with the world right now because people don’t know how to talk about things the way we are supposed to. We need MORE conversation not less.
Sad to hear about the guy who died. Pancreatic cancer is fucked and I’m glad he was kept comfortable through the end.
I agree, there is no civil disagreement anymore. It saddens me sometimes to think about how we have lost the ability to have civil disagreement in society.
