A weekend trip to Alexandra, Central Otago

Alexandra is a beautiful town with a rich agricultural history. The town is also known as "The Town of Gold" because of its gold mining past. It's hard not to be impressed by the picturesque Clutha River banks and the sweeping views of the surrounding hills when visiting this town.

The Clutha River is one of New Zealand's longest rivers, running through Central and South Otago region. Passing through Alexandra, this mighty river not only provides the town a beautiful view from its banks, but also offers many great activities for locals and visitors, such as picnicking, hiking, swimming, boating and fishing.

Climbing up the iconic Clock Hill is a must-do when you visit Alexandra. The walkway to the Clock is short but quite steeply, but the beautiful panoramic view to the town, the river and the surrounding landscape from there is totally worth it.

It is a good idea if you happen to visit Alexandra in summer time to experience picking cherries and enjoy various summer fruits such as peach, nectarine, and apricot.

Driving around the town and its surrounding countryside also offers plenty of beautiful views. The vast nature and peaceful atmosphere there can make all fatigues and worries in life vanish for a bit.

Alexandra is just a small town but for sure you will never be able to explore it all. There is always something to draw you back here.
