Yes, and?

in Weekend Experiences3 months ago

This weekend Smallsteps attended an "improv" music camp for piano players, where she spent a few hours on Friday and half the day on Saturday practicing, before putting on a show for the parents. It was a circus theme, and it was kind of interesting to watch the different groups, separated by age, play their tunes and do silly tricks. I won't call any of it high quality, but it was fun to watch. And most importantly, Smallsteps enjoyed herself and got to do a little bit of freestyle playing with others listening, not just her parents.

I showed her some jazz piano videos tonight.

After the concert, we went to eat at a burger joint that has decent gluten-free options. There was a hockey game about to start near by and when we arrived, it was packed with people in jerseys grabbing a bite before the start. But, we only had to wait ten minutes or so before we got a table and once ordered, the food came quickly. I have decided not to order that much for myself now, as I end up eating leftovers from my wife and daughter anyway.

Fuck. I am turning into my dad.

Except he had a very fast metabolism.

Today, it was really cold outside, so we stayed in, cleaned the house and I also lit the fire to try and get a little extra warmth for our downstairs. My wife is freezing all the time, but for me, I am still walking around without a shirt on. A train myself to not be quite as affected by the cold, and even when I take the dog out at 4am in the morning, I am just in underwear and rubber boots.

Sexy.

So far, I don't think anyone else has seen me like that, but as we head toward summer and the sun rises earlier, I guess I better put at least some pants on, otherwise it will be "you know the house with the guy..."

We even made it to the gym, and to the shops because the fridge was empty. But unfortunately, Smallsteps is running a low fever, so she will be home from school tomorrow. Not that I mind, since I will be here anyway and having her at home means we can play some games together. And she wants to watch a documentary show on prehistoric times we have been slowly cycling through with David Attenborough narrating.

David Attenborough is awesome.
He is 99 years old...

And still working harder than most Gen-Zers.

Tonight, before going to bed, Smallsteps sat at the piano for an hour or so, trying to play songs by ear. She is pretty good at getting them "close" considering she is such a beginner, can't read music, and is not great on the left hand. But they are usually recognisable enough. But her real strength is making up her own songs and this afternoon she was playing something and I thought she was playing from a tutorial video, but it was great. If she keeps it up, she will be writing her own songs in no time.

Once she can write music at least.

But tomorrow won't be the day for writing music. Instead, it will be a sick day for her, where she will be both disappointed she won't go to the school, but also happy as she can do whatever she wants instead. On sick days, she can take it easy, watch some TV, eat a little of what she wants (rice porridge), and just hang out with me and the dog. When she has a fever, she is so calm and sweet.

But for me, because I will be with her and likely have to get up to take the dog around 4am (in my underwear into -30C temps), I am going to head to bed myself. As not only have I been trying (with limited success) to improve my sleep schedule, but I am also likely to get sick at some point too and I am far less calm and sweet. Being tired on top won't help matters.

Maybe I should try to "improv" a happy person.

Yes, and?

Ahh those little camp/workshoppy things are fun. I've helped out with one of them before (except gymnastics, but it was also circus themed and I got roped into it because I can facepaint). That show would have been so cute XD

Good luck with the sleep schedule, you're in dubious company, I've been struggling with that one for a while too x_x I had a really good start towards the end of last year and I've fallen straight back into old habits again because I still haven't finished this thing I really, really, really needed to have finished last week.

Let us know how improving...improv-ing...improvising...oh my gosh none of this is sounding good XD Let us know how trying to improv a happy person goes XD

Circus makes sense for gymnastics! Not sure about piano.

because I still haven't finished this thing I really, really, really needed to have finished last week.

Get on it! :D

I guess it is just like roleplaying - which I hate. But I did say to my wife the other day that perhaps she could role play a good wife. :D

Acrobatics is just one part of circus :) Well maybe two as clowns do some acro too XD One of the circuses I did back in the day we had a percussion group and a ukelele group (two separate acts, and those particular instruments because that's what we had on hand out in the middle of nowhere).

Get on it! :D

I am on it, there's still a bit to go ;-;

she could role play a good wife. :D

Oof burn, are you on the couch now? XD

Those are some happy family moments Smallsteps won't forget in a hurry. These kind of experiences helps improve growing children both socially and emotionally.

Have you considered making her learn to play songs on the piano using tablature? That's one of the things that helped me pick up on the harmonica pretty fast, I don't know if the same can be achieved with the piano.

Have you considered making her learn to play songs on the piano using tablature?

Haven't looked into it. That is for the teacher to decide, but she is reading (slowly) already.

Do you or your wife play the piano? I jsut learned her uncle played it today from his post. She is a talented young lady with the arts. I noticed her coloring and for her age, it was very good. All within the lines and neat.

I do hope she gets well soon and you don't get sick.

Do you or your wife play the piano?

My wife a little, but not well. But my whole family (except me) are musical. I was a jock :D (though not quite like in an 80s Nerds movie)

Considering she was using crayons, she did well! :D

That is the same way with me and my brothers. I was into and participated in sports as well for my extra school activities. I am the only one who never learned to play an instrument. I attempted to the piano a couple times when a teenager. Never had the discipline. My brother tried to teach me the dulcimer when I got much older. But it didn't stick.

I think the fact it was crayons makes it even better.

Man, -30C is no joke. I’m impressed you’re still walking around without a shirt on downstairs! It’s funny how kids are so much more calm and sweet when they have a fever it’s like they just run out of energy for the usual chaos.

The trick is to not care about discomfort too much. It means that in the summer, no matter how cool, it feels warm for me :)

Jazz is one of my favorites. I've been listening to a really great Jazz podcast lately when I am on the treadmill. I hope she recovers quickly and that it somehow skips you. We keep our thermostat at 67 or 68 in the winter which is freezing according to my wife.

Tell Mrs.Bozz that our downstairs is currently at 58F with the fire on. We have some issues, as the basement roof isn't insulated and it is at freezing there. It is -17F outside though.

Our basement gets pretty cold too. Probably not that cold, but we don't do much down there besides work out.

Getting up at 4 AM to take the dog out is no fun...
My wife is always freezing in anything under 75 degrees Fahrenheit and I am always sweating while she is freezing...

Not at all. It has broken my sleep even more. Last week, I didn't get any larger block than 3.5 hours.

Our loungeroom is currently at 59F :D
Not pleasant

@tarazkp, “Yes, and” is not just a rule of theatre, it is an act of existential courage. Often the world throws us a resounding “No”, an obstacle or a loss, and our natural reaction is to resist. But: accepting the present reality (the “Yes”) not as a defeat, but as the firm ground on which to sow what follows (the “and also”).

I am left with the hope that, even on the greyest days, we have the brush in our hand to add a new stroke. Thank you for reminding me that life is not a written script, but a constant collaboration with chance, where our greatest wealth is the ability to keep building. A hug! Blessings to Smallsteps.

I haven't really explored the "Yes and" mentality until very recently, but I wonder if it makes things more palatable?

‘Yes, and?’ is extremely important in everyday life, as it serves as a powerful tool for improving collaboration, creativity, and communication. Originating in improvisation, it promotes accepting others' ideas and building on them, fostering positive environments and solving problems in innovative ways. Well, theoretically speaking, heh heh heh.

With time priorities changes...that part where u like eating leftovers is with most of the parent. Those test much better i guess..

I just wish they would order tastier food :)

I think those moments of creativity and self-expression are important for children. Nice that she had the chance to perform in front of an audience, a great way to build confidence ;)

For sure. She is getting better now, a bit less shy.

She won't need to write the music - she'll just play it from her heart.

I really, really regret reading this. I will never unsee the thought image of you in underpants and wellies.

Hey guess what, one of my neighbours is Finnish. I haven't spoken much to her as yet. But I thought it was rare enough to be interesting!
