Decentralizing our Infrastructure : We Need Testers!

in VIMM.TV - Streaming3 years ago (edited)

Hey there!

@Chiren here with some good news for streamers and viewers alike. If you've been with us for a long time you know expanding our streaming infrastructure has always been a challenge. That recently changed though as we've been approached by the wonderful folks at Livepeer.

What is Livepeer?

By leveraging decentralized infrastructure, Livepeer [...] combines high-quality transcoding with powerful APIs and features that are essential for a seamless creator experience.

Why Livepeer?

When they approached us, we quickly noticed that we had similar motivations and philosophy when it comes to creating a better experience for streamers and their audience. On top of that, the decentralized nature of their infrastructure serves to show how powerful decentralization can be. But also because it allows us to scale our infrastructure at a much lower cost! Using a decentralized network of GPU miners for the transcoding of livestreams, we can eventually offer high quality, low latency transcoding to every streamer on VIMM.

Streams and VODs are delivered via Livepeer's CDN for smooth playback, no matter where you are or what device you're watching on.

When?

Right now! Well... At least for the small group of testers we've selected. You may have noticed a few channels now have 4 different resolutions you can pick from.

The plan is to gradually roll out the new infrastructure to more streamers, and eventually, phase out our old infrastructure. By the end of Q2, all the streams on VIMM will be ingested, transcoded, and delivered using this new network.

I want in!

That's why we're here today. We need streamers who are willing to be our guinea pigs as we start rolling out this new tech on our platform. If you're a streamer and you're interested in helping us with testing, simply leave a comment below and share the link to your VIMM channel.

@chiren I am interested in being a tester, I would love to cooperate with the Vimm project is sensational. vimm.tv/gr33nm4ster The only thing is that I can do it from Monday to Friday because I am busy on weekends.😃

You're in! To start using the new infrastructure, head to the "My Keys" tab on your settings page. There you will see a list of new servers to choose from, and your new stream key as well!

Get in touch on the VIMM Discord if you need any help getting setup on the new ingests! 😀

Good to know you have work the way thru everything, and keep on improving it!

Namaste 🙏

@tipu curate

Since some time now I've been looking for a platform to start some live streaming...but when checked on Vimm...i saw only gamers streaming there...i feel it's kinda only for gamers, correct me if I'm wrong.
Are foodies or anyone with general contents allowed to livestream?
If yes...please count me in!
Cheers

Anyone can stream on VIMM! As long as it's your content, you're free to stream whatever you like. Even better if you're bringing something new and unique, we would love to support that!

I wouldn't mind giving it a go! I stream from an alt account, vimm.tv/msearles. I'm not very regular, but if you just want people I am always curious about new things!

You're in! You can find your new stream key and the list of servers by going to the "My Keys" section of your settings page.

If you do happen to try, let us know how it goes! 😀

Thanks, I am travelling at the moment... might give a light game on the hotel wifi to see if it works out... although through a VPN at the same time might be a disaster. Still, no harm in trying!

I remember we discussed something alike a few years ago, but it wasn't really stable as it was mostly depending on how many viewers you had and each viewer was a peer, so if you had little viewers or the viewers where too far away from each other you would never have a stable connection

I now mostly stream on Twitch for another project I'm working on. But I gladly shift to VIMM on Hive if it helps. The idea sounds fascinating, is it a chain on it's own (and mineable) or is hashpower aquired using renting services like Nicehash? Also how many streams a week on average should testers aim for?

I remember we tested a P2P delivery system a while ago, but we didn't notice any improvement. Heck, some streams were actually worse when there was only a few viewers.

But this is a completely different approach. The delivery is achieved using a standard CDN for smooth playback. The part that is really decentralized here is all the GPU power used for transcoding. It is built on the Ethereum blockchain. The "miners" are basically allowing the network to use their GPU power to transcode streams, and in return they get ETH and LPT (Livepeer Tokens).

This allows us to scale at a fraction of the cost of setting up traditional ingest servers, while delivering better performance. There's also a few cool things like the clever load balancing that automatically switches you to a different ingest if the one you're connected to is performing poorly.

Honestly this is just like playing with a shiny new toy.

This sounds interesting, this is the first decentralized solution for video feed that sounds like it works (though I have to admit I don't read/research a lot into it). If it is as interesting I might even look into "mining" it as well

We're just looking to get as many people from different regions on the new ingests for now, the weekly average doesn't matter as much.

It is very happy to hear such good news

You're in! Check the "my keys" tab on your settings page to pick a new server and grab your new stream key 😀

Let us know how it goes!

Feel free to jump on the VIMM discord if you need any help getting setup.

Thank you for being interested. It will be quite an exciting experience

I'll try now, we'll see how :) @chiren
