They say opportunity comes but once. Sometimes it arrives when we are not prepared, or we clearly recognize it but, out of fear or discouragement, allow it to slip through our fingers. Opportunities are like doors that open, if you step into it at the right time can lead to success , growth and progress. Although, sometimes missing an opportunity does not always mean the end forever loss. For me, it often serves as a lesson a reminder to be more serious, more alert, and more courageous. In fact, some opportunities pass us by only to make way for better ones. However, if a second and better chance comes and we still fail to utilize it, then we may truly have “missed the boat.”
I once encountered such an experience. After I had just finished writing my SSCE ( secondary school certificate examination), I stayed at home doing nothing productive. Then, a casual job opened up in my mother’s workplace. They needed either a gardener or a cleaner. My mother encouraged me to apply, but at first I was not pleased with the idea. Eventually, I later realized it was not such a bad opportunity, especially since the pay was quite good for someone with only a WAEC (west african examination council ) certificate. Sadly, by the time I made up my mind, it was already too late. I prayed and hoped they would reconsider me, but I was never called back. That was when I knew I had missed that opportunity.
Fortunately, another opportunity came not for a job, but to learn a skill. This time, I did not hesitate. I immediately embraced it and enrolled in fashion designing, which had always been my dream. I put all my effort into it, and that decision has continued to bless my life. Looking back, I realize the first missed opportunity was temporary, while the second one has given me something I can build upon for a lifetime.
From that experience, I learned that sometimes missing one opportunity can push us toward a better one. It is not always the end, but rather an avenue to grow wiser and avoid repeating the same mistake. Still, while we must be alert not to miss the boat, it is equally important to recognize that not every opportunity is meant for us. Some can lead us to our glory, while others may hinder us or even make us worse off. In the end, wisdom and openness are essential when seizing opportunities. If we lack discernment, we may not only miss the boat but also risk being used by those who appear to offer us one.
