Ephemeral love

in The Ink Well2 months ago

The trees waved their branches to the cool evening breeze, shedding their leaves right onto miley's thighs.

"Awnnn! How cute." she said, lifting a certain piece which caught her attention - it was molded in a love shape.

Her mind quickly drifted to Jamie... It was a while since they last spoke.

She picked her phone, wiped off the fragment of leaves which partially covered the screen and sent a voice message to him.

"Hey! What's up? Just wanted to check up on you, I thought it's been a while. Leave a call when you get this."

Days passed by and she neither got a call nor a text.

Her duvet couldn't keep the night cold at bay, the silence which echoed through her soft heart got louder... and louder. She checked her phone every minute hoping for any signs of her lover, but it was all for naught.

The next afternoon, She heard a knock on the entrance door. She jolted from the couch, sprinted to the door, and opened it.

"Hey baby girlll" Sarah, her best friend, screamed in excitement.

"Oh! It's even you," Miley faintly said while walking back to the couch leaving Sarah's outstretched arms hanging in mid air.

"Were you expecting someone else?" Sarah locked the door behind her and jumped onto the same couch where her best friend sat.

"No of course, I wasn't."

"Tell me babe, what's the issue?" Sarah slid her fingers down miley's long hair. "Wait! don't tell me it's Jamie" Her pupils dilated, and her mouth widened.

"You're so dramatic" Miley let out a brief laughter. She couldn't resist Sarah's funny facial expression.

"I've told you that he's either found someone new or moved on with his life," Sarah said while fiddling with her toes. "Well, I'll never find someone new, so you can bank on me anytime anyday."

"You know what? I think we should have a drink at MacDonald's. You know, like the good old days before Jamie came in between us." she added.

"Awnnn... someone's jealous."

"What the hell! Jealous? I'm even trying to make you feel better." Sarah replied, hitting miley's head with a pillow.

"Ouch! I'm definitely doing mine back." Miley took another pillow and hit Sarah on the head, only this time, it was much harder.

They both stood on the couch flinging pillows at each other, and laughing like little kids.

The next day, the two friends sat within a Mcdonald's restaurant nearby, They ordered for two bottles of drinks. They drank, and laughed while having their conversations. Their interaction caught the attention of others in the restaurant who admired both friends enjoying the euphoria of the moment.

Suddenly, Miley's countenance changed. She squinted her eyes trying to get a full glimpse of someone who drew her attention.

She was still trying to figure out who it was when Sarah cut in.

"... And that's what happened. Hey! Are you there?" Sarah snapped her fingers at miley's face.

"Isn't that..." Miley said, pointing towards a certain couple who sat a couple of metres from them.

"Oh my God! That's... It's... Jamie!" Sarah said in surprise. "Bloody bastard!" Realizing she had shouted, she quickly cupped her mouth with her palms, but it was too late. Jamie turned towards the direction of the voice, he gazed past Sarah, locking eyes with Miley as they both glared deeply at each other in confusion.

"Hey, look at me. Don't let him think he's winning." Sarah placed her hands over her friend's chin turning it away from Jamie's direction.

"Mtchewww... Who cares about what he thinks." Miley retorted, acting as though nothing had happened. "So what were you saying again?"

"Oh! Yeah, so I was saying there was..." Sarah went on talking and talking.

Miley nodded in response but the only voice she could hear was that of her thoughts. Deep down, she wished Jamie would leave the stranger, walk up to her, and apologize for ignoring her.

She wished they could ignite a conversation right there, but the signs were clear, he wasn't interested — his eyes said it all.

"Well, Atleast I've got Sarah" She whispered to herself.

"You've got what?" Sarah asked.

"Nothing!" She replied. "I can't believe that slipped out of my mouth." Miley whispered within herself - She didn't want Sarah to start her jokes about how indispensable she was to Miley.

"Oh! By the way, I haven't finished my story yet."

"Please go ahead darling" Miley cupped her jaws in her palms, her elbows resting on the table while she smiled as her dramatic friend narrated her endless story.

When love fades in only one partner it is hard for the other to imagine that it is gone. Where did the love go? How could feelings so intense evaporate? And yet this story is as old as love itself. Shakespeare wrote the lines, "Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds". Does one stop loving because one is not loved? This is the cruel irony you explore in your story. Jamie may be done with the relationship, but Miley cannot let it go so easily. And yet, she does superficially. The wound, however remains.

You begin the story well, with dying leaves. Nicely symbolic of a dying relationship. It's over. The scene in McDonald's is effectively written.

Thank you @theinkwell for the comment.

I just checked out the poem by Shakespeare "let me not to the marriage of true minds" — it was inspiring indeed. Greetings!

Oh my, I can imagine how Miley felt. I thought she was going to get up and cause a scene but I'm glad she didn't and her friend is helping her to move on.

I guess it will be easy to move on now that she knows Jamie has done so already. We have Sarah to thank for getting her out of the house to witness the beginning of a new beginning in her love life.

Sarah is the kind of friend we all need in our darkest moments. Miley was quite lucky.

Have a great day ahead!

Rebuilding HiveBuzz: The Challenges Towards Recovery

Breakups are always difficult and affect us greatly emotionally. I really liked how the protagonist handled the situation when her former partner appeared. Very good work.

Thanks for sharing.
Happy day.

Thank you very much @rinconpoetico7. Indeed, Breakups greatly affect us emotionally.

Have a beautiful day ahead ✨

Leaving a relationship with out even so much as a word, love drifting into thin air, can be very traumatic.
What a good friend Sarah is by the way.
