Lucky Strike

“Is it still a real crime, if you’re choosing not to do any harm but still commiting one?”

That’s what he was thinking just before he said to himself “that’s how they get you, don’t let them get into your head! You’re a detective, not Aristotle.”

He was on his way to see The Captain. The Captain was fearless, wise; he had answers for everything. “The time has come” he thought; this was the right moment to talk to The Captain; tell him about the incidents and hear his opinion. He was investigating the operation by himself; he never mentioned it to anyone else before. Would Captain be mad about him leading such an operation by himself and not letting anyone else know? He wasn’t sure but he wasn’t worried as well. He would understand; he was The Captain after all...

He stood in front of a brown detached house; bottom windows were shinning under the street lamp but there was no light inside the house. He knocked on the wooden door; 1 long, 1 short, 1 long knock, then 1 long, 1 short knock. That was his initials in Mors Code; He would like to know who came to see him beforehand, so as a courtesy, he would do the same thing for everyone. He took a step back and waited. After a few moments, he heard a buzz. He pushed the door and let himself in.

There was a total darkness inside house, but a leak of a light from down floor. He went to the down floor. There was a really soft, yellow light on top of the room and The Captain was in front of his big, wooden ship model. Captain turned around without standing up and saw him:

-Hey kid, what’s up?

He turned to his model again and started to look into pieces.

-Hey Captain, sorry to bother you like this.

-No worries, grab a seat.

He grabbed a stool behind to captain and sat next to him. He wasted no time:

-Captain, i’m here to report you an incident i’ve been investigating.

The Caption was speaking without looking at him.

-Oh, so you’ve been investigating?

-Yes sir.

-Go on.

-I have a very interesting case Captain. Two suspects, male and female, a couple, both in their 30's, i call them Boobie&Clay, referring to Bonnie&Clyde. Boobie because she has big boobs and Clay because he has slightly brown skin like a clay.

The Captain gave him a sudden look:

-That’s awful, but go on.

-This couple, sir, they are thieves. They break into places, but they don’t steal anything.

With the last sentece, he managed to captivate The Captains attention. The Captain dropped the pieces and give his full focus to him.

-How so?

-It all started with an incident i witnessed a month ago. I was walking on the street late night, at 11:04 precisely, i was passing by the Mrs. Coco’s restaurant, i felt something strange all of a sudden, i gazed into the restaurant and saw a moving silhouette. I couldn’t believe my eyes, i kept looking but nothing else happened. But the suspicion was there. I had to get rid of that suspicion. So, i sneak into the restaurant at the back door.

-You broke into the restaurant?

-Yes sir, on behalf of the security issues.

-How did you sneak into the restaurant exactly?

-I had my lockpick with me. I opened the back door.

-So you’re carrying your lockpick everywhere?..

-Yes sir, all behalf of the security issues.

-Oh, security issues... Okay, go on.

-So i saw the couple on behind the register. They were talking but i couldn’t hear what they were talking. Boobie, with her lockpick, was trying to unlock the register. After a short while, she did. I pull out my phone, and i was ready to report the situation to the unit. But then, she didn’t take anything. She just looked at the Clay, they gave high five to each other, and started packing. I knew they were going to use the backdoor so i hid somewhere else. They just walked pass in front of me and left. That’s it! They didn’t steal anything!

-They didn’t? Maybe they did, how do you know?

-That’s what i thought, so i started following them.

-You started following them?

-Yes sir.

-All behalf of security issues.

-Yes sir.

-Go on.

-9 incidents sir, 9 brake ins; Boobie is an excellent lockpicker, and Clay, i don’t know what he does but he’s extremely good at that too... I don’t know what he does; that’s how good he is on what his doing. All the incidents are identical; they broke into places, shutted all the cameras, wander around the place, open up the register, celebrated their success and left. They did shops, jewelry stores, markets, pharmacies... 9 incidents with no harm done. But this last one.. No, sir... They went too far.

-Go on.

-This last incident, they we’re in a dentist. They did the same pattern; break in, walk around, open the register, and leave... But between the register and leaving, Clay; gave a brief look at the dentist’s degree. Right there! I finally got him. He was really good i must admit, but i finally got him.

-Got him how?

-For the first 9 incident sir, i couldn’t make up any good theories. I thought: Are they committing a real crime? Because they were not stealing anything! But they were breaking into places; and breaking into places is a crime, right? But why is it a crime? Because usually you break in somewhere and steal something from there. No, they didn’t do that. But on the last incident, Clay looked at the degree and saw the school that dentist graduated. Now, Clay right there, has gained a formal information in somewhere he is legally not allowed to be in. He learned something he shouldn’t have learned like that. That right there, is a crime to me, sir. Then i thought about reason behind all this, which i shouldn’t have done. I believe they were trying to be a good person, sir. They were getting themselves in such positions which committing a crime or do the wrong thing is so easy, and each time they were choosing to the right thing. It was a pretty good strike for them, they have break in a lot together, they get through a lot, just to test themselves and feel capable each time. So that was really unfortunate for them.

-Okay, okay... Look, you’re good, okay? I believe that. You needed someone to talk, and i tried to be helpful, i didn’t want to turn my back to you, but we have to admit that this is not going so good, kid. That was a complete nonsense you just told! That was really extreme; it’s not them went too far, it’s you that went too far… You know that i’m not a police captain, you know that i’m just an old ship captain, right? Just look at the size of this ship model... And you’re not a detective, kid, you know that... You have an exceptional imagination, which leads you to shit sometimes. I must warn you, that’s my responsibility, because i’m hearing what you’re saying. But maybe it’s the time that you get proper help? What do you say? You know that it’s not something to be ashamed of... Some functions are just doesn’t work the way they’re supposed to work. It’s a physical thing; it’s not on your control all the time...

-Have a good night, Captain; thank you for your time.

He got up, turned his back and left. He didn’t even hear The Captain on his way. So, it was serious; they’ve been bugged the house!

The next day, Captain got out of the bed. He had an omlette for breakfast and while he drinks his first coffee, he gazed into the newspaper. He saw the headline: Modern Bonnie & Clyde were caught breaking in!
