“You bastard!!!” Ally shrieked before she baptized Noah with her glass of wine, she stomped away from the table fighting back tears and trying her best to ignore the eyes in the restaurant staring at her. She felt betrayed, hurt and let down all at once, as she got into her cab and slammed the door she thought back to how she had gotten here.

Early that morning, she had woken up late and headed to work in a hurry hoping to make it to her desk before her boss made it to the office, she was finally done with her probationary period and today was supposed to be the day she would find out if she was getting retained as a staff or if she was back on unemployment.
“MD already asked for you…he said to come see him as soon as you get in” Mary the receptionist informed her as soon as she walked into the office.
She was only ten minutes late and it was her first time but of course on the one day she was late he would be on time.
“I’m so sorry I’m late Sir, the vehicle I was in broke down and it was quite a hassle trying to get another one, my car is still at the mechanics workshop…it won’t happen again Sir” she blurted as soon as she walked into his office. That story was only partly true and she hoped his piercing eyes would not see past her lies, yes her car was being fixed but she was actually late because she had stayed up late waiting for Noah to get back home, They had moved here together in search of greener pastures (Well she had actually followed him), and they had been engaged for eight months. His inability to find a stable job in that time had led to a drinking problem which meant coming home at very odd hours and unfortunately for her she couldn’t sleep unless she knew he was in bed safely.

“That’s quite alright miss benson, please have a seat” her boss said, gesturing to the seat in front of him.
“In the past couple of months you have proven to be a valuable addition to our team, you are hard working, intuitive, industrious and I feel like you have a lot of potential…unfortunately I feel like we cannot fully maximize your potential here.”
She felt her heart drop to the ground, she wondered how she would survive between now and whenever she got a new job, she had Noah to think about too…she was supporting them since he hadn’t found a job, how would they cope now.
“Whilst we may not be able to fully maximize your potential here, I think our Accra branch could use someone like you, a managerial position just opened there and you are honestly my preference for filling the position” her boss said interrupting her thoughts. “I know it means uprooting your life and moving there but it would come with a considerable raise, Accomodation and a new car, so no more car trouble for you…what do you think?”
“I don’t know what to say Sir, I didn’t expect this” she managed to respond, her heart racing and her mind already overthinking and creating panic in her head.
“You’ve earned it, it’s a huge decision…think about it and get back to me by Monday.” Her boss said dismissing her.
She could feel her legs shaking as she walked out of his office and back to her cubicle, she had fought to be noticed and earn her place in this office because she had hoped for full time employment but this was beyond what she had expected. She shared the news with her elder sister who was very excited for her and urged her to seriously consider the opportunity as it could be a great launching pad for her career. Everyone she spoke to was happy for her and encouraged her to take the position but she needed to speak to Noah, they arranged to meet at his favorite restaurant after work and she spent the rest of the day thinking about what this offer meant for them as a couple.

He was late, she had called Noah once she got off work and told him she was headed to the restaurant, but an hour thirty minutes later and he was nowhere to be found. She rehearsed appropriate ways to break the news to him over and over again to distract him from the wait and just when she was at her wits end and about to give up he showed up.
He didn’t offer an explanation and she didn’t bother asking, he was here now and she had waited all day to share her big news with him.
“How was your day babe” she asked sweetly once they were halfway through their meal.
He shrugged nonchalantly, even though moving here had been his idea, she felt like the city and the many rejections had taken a toll on him.
“You know I told you I’d find out about my job today” she waited for a reply, when it didn’t come she continued. “I've got the job, but they’re transferring me to Accra, Ghana to fill a big position there, We’d get a house, a new car, a good raise…I think it’d be good for us…what do you think”.
“Of all the people at your office, why are you being sent to Ghana to fill a position?” He asked Coldly.
“My boss thinks I would be a good fit for the job, and who knows babe…you might find work easier in Accra”. She said trying to reassure him but hurt that he wasn’t at least happy for her.
“We are not moving to Ghana Ally, my life is here…all my dreams are here….it won’t work”. He said taking a swig of his beer.
“I know babe, it doesn’t have to be full time, but it’s a huge opportunity. We could use the money. And if I don’t take it we’ll both be unemployed and the rent is due any minute, I moved here for you…won’t you at least consider it for me.”

Everything had been fine up to this point, she was still hoping they would talk it out, she was praying he would at least consider it…if he chose not to go afterwards she would stay with him and soldier through whatever came their way. Everything was fine until he said…”Are you sleeping with your boss? Because that would explain how you got the job so easy when we were both looking for a job there. And it would explain this “big opportunity” you and I know you’re not qualified for….”.
It took her a few seconds to process what he said but once she did she poured her drink on him and stormed out of the restaurant.
This wasn’t love, that wasn’t the Noah she followed here, the Noah she chose to stay loyal and faithful to even though he has never returned the favor. It felt like a veil was lifted from her eyes and she finally saw him for what he was…A broken man, incapable of loving her because he couldn’t love himself.
It was time to choose her, it didn’t matter what Noah thought…this was Ally’s choice.

I'm happy she left. Although, I feel so sorry for Noah, the constant rejections he had to had to deal with really did a number on him.
He probably shouldn't have taken it out on her though.
It's not her fault he's jobless.
