Some of the women wore long gowns, and the men were decked out in formal evening attire. Black. They stood on the sand by the shore, where the waves lapped gently beneath the Autumn twilight. One by one, they placed flowers and candles on the calm surface of the water. Then they stood still and watched the sun set. Only the waves could be heard as the flowers and the flames glided silently towards the deep.

I'm not sure this qualifies, technically, as a story, but it is very well written. The scene is evocative and we surely know what has happened. I like especially the power of the word "Black" here.
