This periodic magazine highlights a small selection of short stories posted to The Ink Well community that stood out and were awarded a Curie vote. Thank you to all authors in The Ink Well for sharing your creative work!

I told you so

He continued lamenting: Even my sister refused to take custody of my son, and it just seems like I'm stuck with him, and it's really frustrating because it has affected my finances a lot as I can no longer be mobile sourcing for contracts and other business activities.

I had wanted to console him, but then I remembered the argument we had when he downplayed women, then I asked him a sarcastic question he didn't know where the question emanated from:

Your son is thirteen right? He's already grown, why don't you go with him on business trips?

Breaking Point

I arrived at his office to find Stanley drinking from a nearly empty bottle of alcohol, which was quite surprising as I knew him to be a non-drinker.
"How could you? How could you ignore my calls?" He asked, waving his finger in my face.
I glanced at him and sensed the rage building up. His body seemed to vibrate with intensity as he took steps toward me, prompting me to instinctively retreat a few steps backward.
"I really don't understand why you are getting all worked up. You've been doing the same to me for months. I only gave you a little taste of your own medicine."

The enchanted ring

Anuk received an energy bolt in his leg and fell with a crash. The Shadow laughed thunderously, as he watched as the ring had completed its charge. "I don't have to wait any longer. The destruction of your clan will be complete. Now watch as I fulminate the last Huayos. Haha."

The Shadow raised his hand with the ring, and an intense light began to unfold from the ring. At that instant, Anuk grabbed a spear from the ground and threw it at the Shadow's hand, the Shadow screamed in pain as the lightning bolts went in different directions. Anuk got up and with his last strength pushed the Shadow towards the precipice.

Wrapped in a black overcoat, you were rushing towards the red lights— I followed your every movement, every gaze you set on the clinic’s premises to find me out. I was there, just around the corner, waiting patiently to greet you with a big smile; as always. As your eyes grew impatient looking for me, I couldn’t wait, showed up— oh, how surprised you were to see me but you didn’t smile. As if you forgot to smile altogether.

I didn’t find You there, with all those radiating aura, a force powerful enough to drive my insanity away— what have you become; it’s not the YOU that ignited the flame in me long ago.

Unbeliever: The Wood People

“Do not be afraid of your kind.”

“My kind?” Shaga’s eyes widened.

The woman merely walked to Shaga and rubbed the back of his neck. Like a wrinkled sac, Shaga's mortal body as he knew it came crumbling. Shaga looked at his body stunned. He now looked exactly like the little creatures that were now relishing scones of ice cream each. He was only slightly bigger and a pair of wings fluttered above his head.

A mixed-up proposal

"I am breaking up with Bolaji," Aminat told her friends and they left the hotel immediately which made everyone surprised because the party was still on.
Bolaji followed Aminat to ask what was happening and she explained how she thought Bolaji was going to propose to her.
"The ring wasn't mine and why would you cook up such a story in your head," Bolaji asked but didn't get a response as Aminat left angrily.

27 missed calls

"Dad! Franca! What....?"
"What is it? Where did you go in the night when I called you 27 times, and you didn't pick up?" The dad interrupted with a high-toned voice as he got up from his chair and walked closely to her.
"Dad, I didn't go anywhere. I was asleep, and my phone didn't ring out, that's why I didn't hear," she knew she would be blasted. She hid her face in shame as he said that.
"Didn't ring out? Wasn't it you that set it like that? When will you learn? I was able to pull you out from turning off your phone at night, and here you are, with an even more childish act. What if something bad was actually happening to me at that time, and I needed you to pull me out of danger? What would have been my fate?"
