COVID19; Ghana's Situation

in OCD4 years ago

As it stands now Ghana's cases which began with 2 foreigners on the 15th of March, 2020 has now escalated to 205 cases as the time of putting together this write up. Although community spreading is still said to be very low with the majority of the cases being foreigners or Ghanaian travelers who visited places with higher number of confirmed cases, we are still hopeful for the very best even if they worse is yet to come. The cases initially were localized to only the Greater Accra Region which holds the only international airport for the Country, it was later recorded in the Greater Kumasi Region which has the second capital city of the nation in addition to the biggest market in the whole of West Africa. As the number grew to the 70s the initiated a close of all our boarders; land, air and sea with mandatory quarantine and testing for individuals who may come in at the last moments of the implementation. This led to sharp increase into the 100s as a good number of people tested positive.

The president later on the 27th of March initiated a lock down for the two major regions in an attempt to restrict the movement of the virus to the other regions and to flatten the curve for the rise in cases, unfortunately 48hours was given to allow residents to stock up with essential things at home and a lot of people used this window to travel out of these restricted zones to other regions. Although some were caught some also managed to pass through this has led to the current situation as at now with new cases recorded in five more regions including the Upper East Region, Upper West Region, Northern Region, Eastern Region and Upper West Eastern Region. Some of the cases are foreigners who smuggled themselves into the country and were caught and tested whiles some are citizens who supposedly have not have any kind of contacts with infected persons.

Experts say the country have to go into total lock down soon however the odds are still being weighed concerning the impact on the economy, the homeless and the pauper. We await the President's message. While we do that let me remind us all to please stay at home, practice social distancing, wash our hands frequently with soap, adopt the frequent use of hand sanitizers in the situation where we may not have access to water to wash our hands and to report any suspected symptoms or cases to the nearest health facility.

Kindly Take a minute to read our eye health posts and save a sight. Thank you;

What is @bettervision about?

@bettervision is is a project initiated by @nattybongo and friends to give back to the society the knowledge and skill acquired through the Optometric Studies in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.It is an outreach system where we visit the less privileged communities to offer free eye screening services and education to the people within the community.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To reduce or prevent vision loss through diseases such as glaucoma, cataract and refractive errors.

To enlighten the majority of the Ghanaian population about the importance of proper visual care.

To conscientize people on the need for regular eye checks

To get more people to have their wards screened within the Critical periods of a Child’s Vision Development; thus from ages 3 to till about 10 years.

To help the blind and people with low vision live a better life within the society through education of the general public to stop stigmatization.

To help in the fight of extreme poverty that puts the health of people at risk
