LOFI - What is LoFi Music and why does it work so well for concentrated studying and learning

in OCD4 years ago (edited)
Hello everyone! :)

We wish you a nice sunday evening and hope you had a great and relaxing weekend!

We have been working on more stuff for you to come during the last days.
So be prepared for the next candies. 😊🍭

Our last post was a LoFi PLaylist on 3Speak. It´s perfect for working and studying.

But why does LoFi Music work so good as background music if you want to do concentrated work?

First, what is LoFi Music even?

LOFI stands for the words "Low Fidelity" and is deliberately produced to sound like an old recording. It´s typical for these tracks, that you can hear a vinyl crackle sound on them, or even rain sounds which demonstrates the crackling and hissing noises of old recordings.

The frequencies are somewhat different to "modern" music. Most of the time, to get this old sound, high frequencies are shelfed off at about 5-6 kHz.

And also most of the time, LoFi has a very warm and saturated sound, the bass frequencies are "boosted" a little bit.

And all this harmonic distortion together with the rain sounds helps the brain normally to relax. It´s somewhat related to ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response). But we will talk about this topic later on. 😊

Typical LoFi music is normally also quite slow in its speed, and has nice and a little melancholic chords in it. There is not happening too much in the music, that´s why it´s not distracting and therefore perfect for background music.

If you did not listen to our first LoFi playlist yet, go over to 3speak and do so. To experience the relaxing touch of this great music genre yourself! 😊

We also have lot´s of music for more LoFi and also Chill-House playlists! So there will be even more playlists soon. 🎵🎧
We are so happy that already alot of HIVE musicians submitted music to our channel, and we really look forward to using their music!

If you also want to submit tracks which are relaxing and somewhat good mood (no matter if LoFi or a different genre), please do so here: [email protected]

We would be very happy to listen to your music!!

We wish you a very relaxing start to the new week!

See you soon with more music!

Yours,

BRAIN CANDY (Steffi & Lavinia)

Really? LoFi is good to concentrate, I didn't know. That said, I hardly listen to music when I work, study or something like that. I usually get way too distracted. Somehow my ears and mind are drawn towards and when good, into the music. I never tried LoFi music in the background. I shall try this recording tomorrow when working again. Writing this comment while listening went ok, I think. But I let you be the judge of that ;)

btw I love the 'old' sound of music. Feels more organic in a way to the clean studio recordings that became the defacto standard when the CD made it to the market.

We would love to hear if it worked, for your comment it did for sure :D! For us it works good with Lo-Fi. There are not too much ups and downs in the music so its not so distracting. Me personally, I can't focus very good when there is singing in the music. Insturmental is mostly okay.
And you are totally right, especially with some sounds like a soft crackle it feels more organic. :) Thats why I last year got a second hand record player :D
Have a good day!

Still need to test. Yesterday got something done while listening to an album by Joel Mull, but I'm missing so many layers in the music too when I listen without doing anything else. Anyways moved the post to a prominent spot in the open tab section of my browser so I can do the test tomorrow: Work whilst listening :)

Cool, hope it works for you and it makes work more fun :)

I love to hear that people are buying old record players. I am a 70's kid and remember my first one that my parents bought for my birthday. It was battery powered, I even took it on holiday with me. I don't own one now though!

Cool, yeah it just has a different feeling than Spotify and so. And I love to go shopping for records on second hand markets :D

That’s music to my ears, if you pardon the pun!

I think lofi music goes good with studies sleep etc because it's like the sound is easy to the mind. I believe it can also help to switch emotions like anger to being calm

Yes, we agree, it can calm the nerves after some stressful day :)
