Influential podcast host signs multi-year deal

Hell just about froze over. Spotify announced this week that they've purchased the rights to the Joe Rogan Podcast for upwards of 100 million dollars. The show's current home on YouTube (and elsewhere), will move over to the network in September and become a Spotify exclusive by the end of the year.

A big deal in podcasting

Let me tell you, this is a very big deal. Rogan has immense influence with his vast listening audience and the long-form interviews allow for deep dives on compelling subjects. I'm a huge fan and what surprises me is that Apple didn't join in on a bidding war to make JRE a company exclusive. They certainly have the cash.

This deal may open up the podcasting world to even more big names signing multi-year contracts. My main concern is that the flow of the show may be peppered with ads. Will the company put pressure on Joe not to have controversial guests like Alex Jones or Milo Yiannopoulos on the podcast?

A UFC color commentator, Rogan doesn't seem like the type of guy who would tolerate anyone messing around with his show. I wouldn't be surprised if he'd worked in a way to bail if the company began to piss him off. At least he won't have to worry about YouTube takedown notices or copyright strikes. I'm used to watching 3 and 4 hour Joe Rogan interviews and wonder if Spotify will remain hands-off. Do you think this is a good move for Spotify and fans of the Rogan podcast?

Thank you so much!

With pleasure!

Joe's influence has already been good for them. Spotify stock had a nice jump after the announcement!

I'm glad to hear!
