Memorial Day was celebrated today in the United States, and after almost three years in this country, today I was finally able to attend one of the parades held to commemorate the date. Well, to be fair, I had never attended because the previous two years it had been cancelled due to the pandemic. Silly me. Well, moving on, I had never paid attention to the celebration, it had always gone unnoticed. But today I was able to attend the parade honoring the fallen and I was able to enjoy a bit of the patriotism and respect paid give to those who died serving the country or those who belonged to the U.S. Navy, but are no longer with us.
For this day the city of Kent organizes a parade that starts downtown and ends at the cemetery. We were stationed at the famous bridge that crosses the Cuyahoga River, right in the center of Kent. There, among children and adults dressed in the colors of the American flag, and carrying their flags, the tribute to the fallen began.
First, a solemn act took place in which the mayor of the city recalled the struggles and sacrifice of the American soldiers; then, the honor guard fired several shots in the air in honor of the fallen; and immediately, the national anthem was sung. A solemn act up to that point.

Then, the parade began, led by the mayor of the city. The children enjoyed the candies and chocolates that were thrown from the vehicles. Fire trucks, police patrol cars, a school bus and antique cars and motorcycles paraded.

Fire trucks
One of the main attractions of the parade. People applauded the personnel. There we can see the modern unit, and also an old unit, which is only used to be exhibited as an antique.

Happy Memorial Day! I hope you had a good time at the parade. I am sure it usually has more entries but a lot of parades are small outside of the cities as many still have a high number of cases of covid still.
It is less of a show of hometown people too. But, I can hope that next year will be happier and healthier.
Are you in school here? I just recalled you said you got here in 2019, right before the pandemic? That is an awful time to come. I mean for you. :( I cannot think of a worse time to make a transition like that!
Thanks for sharing your parade with us @francisaponte25
Yes, the parade was short , but that was fine with me ! I suppose that the one in Washington was really big.
Yes, I came for a two-year program ( a masters in translation into Spanish). Already finished it. And yes, everything changed with the pandemic. All my friends left for their countries/cities ( as classes were online), I stopped enjoying the American academic life on campus and the interaction with people from different cultures and nationalities . My world got small. It was bad. But , we could make it . That's the important thing. ( this is why I say you are my dear diary) Ja, ja, ja . I dont talk to many people around here.Oh! I feel honored with your visit. Thanks @dswigle.
I like sending pictures 😂😂
You are literally in the middle of nowhere and I understand your feeling. We have moved every six months to two years for a while, in a worldwide fashion. I understand missing home and its familiarity and the love left behind. Because I knew my time would be short where I was, I made the most of where I was and immersed myself in the culture and the people. It wasn't always easy, but, it was always interesting.
Yours would be near impossible for me. Having no connection and having Covid? So, I congratulate you on making it! I am surprised you are still in the US unless you are working towards a Ph.D.? I hope life gets better where you are. It will be a most unsatisfying experience - and we cannot have that. :(
I like getting pictures! The parades are always huge, but, maybe because they are televised?
I applied for a TPS for Venezuelans. No , no PHD ( long story).
I have never seen a parade like that. Yes, maybe it is because it would be televised.
What do you mean by this?😂
Is that what you think of OHio? 😂
Not at all, but, you are far and away. Kent is beautiful, my cousin went to school (more west) and it was a good distance from the ocean. We like the ocean! Anywhere far from it is in the middle of nowhere. 😂
We have a few relatives in Columbus, Ohio, and the surrounding area. The farms are wonderful and life is good.
Yes , I love the farms here. I have been to the ones located at the Amish Country.
