Julia cried the second she heard the news. Dr Bester stood in front of her smiling. They had finally made peace with the fact that they would never have children. They put it behind them after many years of unsuccessful treatments.

They just didn’t have time for a child now.

She couldn’t wrap her head around everything that was suddenly going on in her mind. It was just not possible.  Not now.

She was nearly forty and her business was thriving. They could travel wherever they wanted, and George finally made partner at the law firm. They were happy. They had a great life, and now this. What in the world was she going to tell George?

They've hardly seen each other in the last three months and now she had to tell him the news. She felt disorientated when she got up and Dr. Bester told her to sit down for her minute.  He handed her a prescription and told her to come in during the week for an ultrasound.

She felt nauseous and went into the lady’s room. She washed her face and took a deep breath before walking out. Her driver was waiting downstairs and opened the car door for her. She had no expression on her face when she got into the car and told him to drive straight to the office.  She had an important meeting.

She couldn’t deal with this now. It had to wait for tonight when George came home. They had a difficult decision to make, and she was not looking forward to it.

She shoved her feelings inside and was back to her old self when the meeting began.

After the meeting, she felt sick again and asked her secretary to go fill the prescription. She felt a little better after laying down on her couch for a few minutes.  Her mind kept on drifting back to the doctor’s words.

This was something George always wanted, but at his age, she had no idea if this was still something he wanted.

She had been feeling ill since her trip to New York but thought it was just some kind of bug she picked up. She felt tired all the time, and a few mornings she was a little nauseous but thought it was just a stomach bug.

All the signs were there, but she wasn’t looking for the signs.

She decided to call it a day and told the driver to take her home.  She had to go and rest before she saw George.

At home, she took a quick shower and checked herself in the mirror. There was still nothing to see, but ever since Dr. Bester told her, she felt differently.

She warmed up some soup and ate a little to keep her strength up.  George phoned earlier to say that he had a late lunch, so he wasn’t hungry.

Just as she put her cup in the dishwasher, she heard the door.  She sighed and then turned around to face George.  She had no idea how she was going to break the news to him.
