IELTSwithme: Writing P2 - Academic subjects and practical ones, which one is more important?

in OCD4 years ago

Hi there,

Today I tried a brand new type of writing task 2. With this type of question, I need to discuss both views and finally state my own opinion about it.

I found it quite hard to outline my writing as there are several standard structures that can be applied. I eventually chose one that fits my style. The main body of my writing is separated into 3 paragraphs comprising of the discussion of the first view, the discussion of the second view and my opinion. Although it is quite long, I think that my idea is stated clearly in this way.

I have not really familiarized myself with this type. So I may need to practice more.

Q: Some believe that more academic subjects such as chemistry, physics and history should be taught in schools, while others believe that students will derive benefit from studying practical subjects, such as motor mechanics and cooking. Discuss both views and provide your own opinion with relevant example

There is a debatable topic with divided opinion on whether schools’ curriculum should contain more academic subjects or practical ones. While each side of the debate has its own convincing reasons, I believe that students should learn a wide range of subjects, which benefits not only students but also society.

From the academic subject supporters’ perspective, this type of subject will bring many advantages for learners in the future. It provides a foundation of academic knowledge and enables students to pursue tertiary education, which eventually helps them to end up landing respected and lucrative professions such as engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc. Given the fact that academic qualifications are increasingly important nowadays, academic discipline advocates believe that by offering a greater proportion of chemistry, physic, and the like in the schools’ curriculum, students will have better opportunities to earn not only huge income but also higher social status in future.

Meanwhile, practical subject proponents also claim that this type of subject benefits not only students but also society. First, with practical disciplines, such as motor mechanics and cooking, students can obtain a skill set which can be applied directly in their lives. Besides, those subjects also offer hands-on experience to learners and prepare them for skilled employment or help them to enroll in apprenticeship courses. Second, there is a connection between what have been taught in the school and demands of job market. If a country’s educational system only teaches students to be doctors, lawyers, and other academic professions, it would be a crisis in labor as there is a lack of manual workers such as bakers, makers, repairers, etc.

Finally, in my opinion, the curriculum in schools should be diversified and contains a variety of subjects so that students can gain comprehensive knowledge and skills. Students also can choose which subject suits them most based on their strengths as well as their passions. Furthermore, the diversity in subjects taught in schools will also secure a sufficient labor market in the future with a wide range of workforce from highly educated to manually skilled ones.

In conclusion, as both sides of the debate show their own advantages and benefits, I truly believe that both academic and practical subjects should have equal proportions in the school's curriculum.

The schools or our parents won't teach us about Bitcoin though ;)

No, but maybe in 5–10 years, Bitcoin and cryptos in general will be an integral part of both academic and practical studies.

I think it is a very good way to present your opinion. It flows really well and can be easily understood.

Very impressive essay. Clearly laid out in an almost perfect format, with very clear and convincing writing.

As for the topic, I agree that both academic and practical courses are needed. I went to a high school that focused on academics, and it suited me quite fine. On the other hand, many of my friends went to high schools where they learned about car engines and building construction and so on.

I benefited from my education, and they benefited from theirs. We have succeeded in different ways. The option to choose between academic and practical subjects should be given to all students.
